The Importance of the Constitution
The Constitution is important to me because it gives people rules to follow, and it acts like a handbook so that the people can be the best person they can be. There are a total of Twenty-seven Amendments to the Constitution, and each Amendment has its own basic guideline to follow so that we can keep America as safe and crime free as possible. In the First Amendment, which was ratified in 1791, gives the people the freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and protest. In my opinion, this is one of the most important Amendments because without it America wouldn’t be the same. Imagine if the Immigrants never came to America, how many traditions and religions do you think we would have today? The answer is not a lot, when Immigrants came to America, they brought along their traditions, food, culture, religion, and so much more. The First Amendment protects all those things the immigrants brought over to America. If we didn’t have the First Amendment, we wouldn’t have as many religions and traditions that we can follow, instead we would all be forced to follow a specific religion. The Amendment states that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, nor any place subject to their jurisdiction.” I believe that without this Amendment we would still have slavery to this day. Abraham Lincoln found slavery to be abhorrent and wanted to put an end to it. Lincoln stated “As of January 1, 1863, all slaves in the rebellious states shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” Even though this amendment didn’t free all slaves back then, it made such an immense change in today’s
