“Wow, I’ve never seen a belly button or shoulder before,” said no teenage boy ever. Dress codes have become a big issue in public schools. Teachers are becoming far too strict. School dress codes should not be as strict because, teachers are more attentive to the dress code rather than academics, the dress code is very sexist, and why should girls be punished because boys are too distracted?
Higher level staff, such as deans and principals, are paying too much attention to the dress code instead of focusing on academics. Teachers walk around and dresscode people instead of helping students out with what they really need help with and this is not acceptable. While there needs to be some kind of restriction on what girls wear, the dress code
The prominent reason behind the various overdone school rules regarding dress is the loose power that administrators have been given. They have been “reserve[d] the right to determine if a clothing item or accessory is appropriate for school” (Carroll High School Student Handbook 2010-2011 18). The officials at school are using their own personal opinions to judge the students’ dress. Since styles change as time goes on, the generation in control and the
The people who are in charge of creating the school dress code don’t think of girls feelings, or their need to be an individual. There are also some unnecessary rules in schools, and what schools deemed inappropriate or distracting. The schools are taking some of the girls rights away. I believe that the dress code for the younger generation is too focused on girls, and it’s way too strict. Students should not have to wear school uniforms, some schools went for believing it would get rid of competition.
Dress codes are becoming more and more popular throughout the United States; however, this does not mean all administrators agree with them. In fact, there are educators
You're in English class. The teacher asks a question to the whole class, and you raise your hand. Then your shirt goes up. Instead of getting a smile from your teacher for getting the answer correct, you get a one-way trip to the main office. Well, this is what happens to so many girls at school every day. The dress code Brings girls self-esteem down, and you can miss So Many hours of class time.
“School officials have a responsibility to provide a safe, secure, and productive learning environment.” Therefore, schools have dress codes because the safety of students is very important. A teacher’s number one priority is their student’s safety and to have a good learning environment. All students should have the same right to their education. Is the clothing the students wear distracting others from learning? It is distracting to others, but that is not the only reason why schools have dress codes. Schools also have dress codes because it helps prevent students from being bullied based on their clothing, especially if they wear something offensive or inappropriate. It also helps them prepare for professional environments as adults in the workplace.
School dress codes send a loud and clear message, “Your individuality is inconvenient.” (Rowland 22). The constitution guarantees the right to free speech, which can be interpreted as the right to freedom of self expression, and students use clothing to express themselves. Another message that dress codes send is that “the self identity that you want to express does not belong here.” Self expression is not an inconvenience or a distraction, it is the lifeblood of our nation. (Rowland 22). Schools tell students that they should be confident in themselves, but how can they if they cannot express themselves? School dress codes now are more about shielding the boys then protecting the girls which implies that boys are immature. Calling a girl’s clothes distracting is implying that she is at fault for any disruptions. “That 's like saying that because a store has a cash register, it 's the store 's fault if it gets robbed!” (Menza 1). Students are going to be distracted anyways. Sexist dress codes are like saying that an article of clothing, or a body part showing on a female will distract male students from learning. Dress codes should be simple for both genders, everyone should wear clothing that covers up the same area. With dress codes, students are forced to dress the same as other students, taking the individuality out of school, but schools try to send the message, you are individual. Figure 1 shows a strict dress codes for both students and
Why should schools modify their dress codes? All throughout the United States, schools have dress codes. Some dress codes have meaning full and low dress code rules, others have rules that make teens feel uncomfortable and get punished for. Daily students are judged on how they dress. Dealing with a dress code takes time and effort for a teen to understand why they are being punished.
Why Student Dress Codes Should Be Limited Dress codes date back to the time of kings and queens. They were made to control what the people wore, what colors they could wear, and what style of clothing certain groups of people could and could not wear. Student dress codes are put in place to help keep a safe and comfortable learning environment, no matter what gender, race, religion, sexuality etc. They unfairly control what students can and can not wear. Although student dress codes have good intentions, they are unfair and need to be limited because they are too strict on female students, take students out of class and send them down the wrong path, and teach girls the wrong things.
How many times have you heard of a child being sent home due to their outfit? In so many towns and cities there is ridiculous dress codes. Most of the dress codes are directed towards females. These rules somewhat make them feel as if they have to hid their bodies so they won’t distract men. High school dress codes are detrimental to all student’s confidence outside and inside the classroom.
The school dress code is a very controversial topic for boys and girls but mostly girls. They treat girl from a young age that we should be ashamed of our bodies and cover up because we're too distracting to the boys. Yes there does have to be some restrictions to the dress code but others that say our sholder is to distracting is taking it to far. Girls should be proud of themselves and really the dress code is tearing down their confidence. If were to distracting to the boys for even just showing a little bit of shoulder that boy should be talked to that girls shouldn't just be seen as an object of pleasure and that there human to. Instead of doing something like that we are told to cover up and should be ashamed for even showing even a little bit of our shoulders or stomach. We do however do need a dress code so people don’t just
During the last few years, dress codes have been implemented and accepted more and more. Dress codes are commonplace and most schools consider them a necessity. Dress codes, however, need to be revised. Dress codes objectify students’ bodies and often interrupt the students’ learning environment more than the student violating the dress code. For example, if a student has dyed hair, then there is still focus inside the classroom, but if the teacher dress codes them, all the class attention is lost. Dress codes should be revised to not interrupt the learning environment and be less objective and shameful to students’ bodies.
Dress code is a big controversy within almost all school districts around the world. There are many different opinions on the topic and how it should be handled, but it is mainly the students who suffer because of these strict, unruly, form of schooling. Girls are mainly the ones who are targeted against being blamed for causing a distraction or being inappropriate. Girls should be able to dress how they wish and not be shamed for it at school. They should not be discriminated against due to their personal clothing choices.
A recent study by Lands’ End found that the number of schools with dress codes increased by twenty one percent from 2000 to 2013. School dress code is a very controversial topic in today’s America. Weather they are against or for it; everyone has their own two cents to put in. Some schools force their students to wear uniforms; while others just say do not wear shorts. I think dress code should be more lenient for three main reasons: there in an inconsistency in rules about dress code, it promotes rape culture, and it promotes sexism in our youth.
In dress code rules, it seems most of the rules target females. Boys are hardly ever disciplined for wearing “inappropriate” clothing. “I’ve never seen a boy called out for his attire even though they do also break the rules” (Zhou 1).When schools target girls on what they wear, it makes them not only upset, but sometimes embarrassed. “Conflict over these policies has also spawned hundreds of change.org petitions and numerous school walkouts” (Zhou 1). Instead of being a facility for education, dress code turns too much attention towards clothing “distractions”. Therefore, the blame should be placed on the school administration, because the dress code they put together results in students not attending classes. Not only does the dress code distract students from their school work, it makes female students feel insecure about they way they look. “Many of these protests have criticized the dress code as sexist in that they unfairly target girls by body-shaming and blaming them for promoting sexual harassment” (Zhou 1). Most of the time when girls are called out for what they wear, it is said they are distracting boys, or putting themselves out there. Boys themselves even go far enough to say the girls are “asking for it”. The dress code falsely blames girls for being promiscuous, when most of the time they are just wearing clothes that are in style. Situations like this have happened so many times, and are still occurring
Some people say that there should be limits to what students can wear at school. Others say there should not.
