At this moment, countless animals know cold cages in laboratories as home. These animals are subjects for clinical research purposes, while others are used out of pure curiosity and to experiment on various products. The majority of these animals are used in painful experiments and are left in pure agony. Although many of them die, few animals survive, but these unlucky ones wish to be put out of their misery as well. Because of the horrendous treatments that animals are enduring, a heated debate has been ongoing about whether scientific or medical experimentation on animals is ethical. Some people still believe that testing is beneficial in various ways. Those people believe that without animals, the military and medical advancements would not be where they are today. The worst part about this is that there …show more content…
Many people voice their opinions that animal testing is beneficial towards medical research, without stopping to think about the abuse these animals are experiencing. One major form of animal testing in modern medicine is vivisection, which is the practice of performing scientific or medical experiments on live animals. Vivisection is one of the worst methods of institutionalized animal abuse in our society, and is authorized and legal. Considering the fact that it is found unethical and illegal to expose human patients to new medicines, without positive benefits and guaranteed safety, isn’t it strange that these laws don’t apply to voiceless and innocent animals that are left to suffer and die? Animals are never given any ethical justification, “Nor is there moral justification for the statement that the relations of scientific men to animals should be under any laws or restrictions save those general ones which regulate the behavior of all men so as to protect animals from cruelty,” (Dewey
Every year, a total of one million children die from pneumonia. If you multiply that number by one hundred, you will have the number of animals that suffer painful deaths due to medical experimentation in U.S. laboratories each year. This number includes animals of all types, from mice and rats to fish and birds. These animals are typically used because of tradition rather than actual scientific reasoning, making their deaths all the more cruel. Animal experimentation is not only unethical, but ineffective and expensive. It should be phased out and replaced with technological alternatives.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” (Mahatma Gandhi). Scientists have been using animals for biomedical research for centuries. They provide a source to get information scientists can not get without harming humans. A lot of debate is spread about whether it is good or bad. Animal experimentation is a controversial topic because it is helpful to humans, but it is also cruel and inhumane.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) statistics records the use of roughly 26 million animals per year for animal testing. These test reports in many cases are poor. Although animals were greatly used in the past the effects of treatments on animals and humans can’t be compared. The human body, reactions to toxins, and usefulness of treatments is different because we are different, “While animal’s maybe ‘whole models,’ states Dr. Aysha Akhtar, MD,” they are the wrong whole model because of interspecies differences.” Testing animals for human treatments should not continue to be practiced.
“Would we imprison our children in cages too small for them to move? Would we violate our sisters and steal their babies? Would we deliberately infect our friends with diseases and leave them untreated? Of course not so why would we do the same to animals? We must abandon the archaic and incorrect boundary of “human,” which we use to justify the ongoing massacre of billions of beings (PETA)”. According to the New England Anti-Vivisection Society, “There is an estimate of 100 million animals that are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in laboratory testing every year. “Most animals in laboratories never will experience fresh air or sunshine, only bars and concrete sound more like a prison well that’s just the beginning of what animal’s experience. There are few facilities that provide some outside caging, and they typically rotate the animals, giving them limited and infrequent amounts of time outdoors. Standard lab conditions, such as small, crowded cages, lack of enrichment, loud noises, and bright lights are all known to create stress in animals. When it comes to animals and their rights, there is a fine line between our needs and taking advantage of these animals just because we consider them to be inferior (NEAVS).”
There are over 26 million different types of animal being tested on for research each year in the United States. Animals are used for testing every year for human research. Different animals go through serious pain, in order for humans to facilitate growth in different fields of study. Many animals are used in order to study diseases and potential cures for the diseases. New research chemicals are tested on animals with similar structures to humans, to see if the medicine can help with certain diseases. Tons of scientific advancement has taken place because of animal testing. Without animal testing, many diseases would still exist, without a safe way to test for potential cures. The issue at hand is the type of treatment that animals have to endure because of the different testing methods. They are treated very poorly, go through intense suffering, and normally have very poor living conditions. A pro to animal testing is that many cures and different medicines have been developed through animal testing. Without animal testing, many diseases would still exist without cures. Secondly, animals have a much shorter life span than humans do, so scientists can study the results through the whole life span of the animal. With humans, it is hard to do a full test because we have such high lifespans, while animals tend to live a lot less longer. Thirdly, many animals have been saved because of animal testing. Many diseases animals deal with now have vaccines and cures, as a result of animal testing. Without it, many animals would have rabies or other types of virus that can be detrimental to the animal’s health. On the contrary, a con to animal testing would be the pain many animals go through as a result of the testing. The tests are experimental, so we don’t know exactly what the chemical drug will do to the animal. Many cases have turned bad and many animals have died as a result, or gone through extensive pain. Next, there are many alternative methods of experimental testing that doesn’t require animals. As a result, why are we still using animals for testing when there are other ways to do it. Finally, animals are different from humans, so they make poor testing subjects. We can’t know for sure how the research
I can see why this is such an issue because animals are not humans but animals still have feelings. Also “Without animal research, millions of dogs, cats, birds, and farm animals would be dead from more than 200 diseases, including anthrax, distemper, rabies, feline leukemia, and canine parvovirus” according to Americans for Medical Progress. Still with all these benefits of these tests the way these animals are treated, the killings, and that there are other ways to test these animals we just shouldn't test on the
Animal experimentation has become very a controversial topic in the United States of America today. In many countries it is still legal to poison, blind, and kill animals for cosmetic uses. While many of the experiments conducted on animals today is required by law, most of it is not. In fact, many countries have placed bans on the testing of certain products on animals. Thousands of animals every day are euthanized owed to animal testing. Due to of the care that animals are enduring, people debate whether animal testing should be implemented at all. Some people believe that animal testing is beneficial in many ways. The people that see animal testing as beneficial say that without animals, medical developments and the military would not be
According to “Breakthroughs Might Mean the End of Animal Testing” if a product or chemical is safe for animals, only 8% of those products will work on humans.(John Ericson 1) Animals have been used for testing for thousands of years, due to their similarities with humans. Over the years public support has significantly decreased. The cruel practice has sparked controversy and needs to be stopped. Animal testing is used throughout the U.S which is why it needs to be banned. If animal testing was banned worldwide, it would prevent millions of animal deaths.
Animal testing has been a controversial topic discussed by many people over the past decade. There are many organizations that are trying to ban the use of animal testing because of the cruelty us humans are doing to innocent animals and the pain and suffering these animals go through. The first organization I found when researching was PETA (People, Ethical, Treatment, Animals). From my research, this is the largest animal rights group founded so far. Their main office is in Norfolk, VA. They are not only fighting animal testing but animals for the use of food, clothing and entertainment. This organization has donated over a million dollars to find non-animal testing methods. Another organization I found was PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine).
Animals have always been the main source of companies to test for the safety of their products. Animal testing can be traced back to Greek scientists such as Aristotle experimenting on live animals. Animals were being tested on because doctors wanted to make sure their products were safe for humans. So, instead of having to put humans at risk with their unknown products, doctors thought it would be safer to test on animals first. This practice is still widely known today, and many people find it acceptable. Animal testing is understandable in the sense that products should be tested for safety first before being released to the public to use. However, many people find animal testing to be cruel because scientists are putting animals through harsh conditions such as being confined to a small area or being abused for disobeying. Those who find it cruel, do not understand how people do not see what is wrong with torturing these animals when there are many alternatives. Animals are exposed to dangerous chemicals that could put their life at risk,
Everyday animals are being locked up in cages and are being tested on. Animals in laboratories do not provide reliable results in human beings, and are going through cruel and inhumane tests. There are also alternative methods that replace the need for the animals. Testing animals has contributed to many life savings cures and treatments, along with animals themselves benefiting from the results of the testing. Animals are also similar to humans in many ways and are appropriate test subjects. Animal testing needs to stop because every year 100 million animals die. The animals have no say in this treatment being done to them. Animals cannot be tested in a variety of human procedures despite what the benefits are.
Animal testing is the cause of many controversial arguments. Is it ethical? Is it truely the best option? The answer to both of these questions is no. Animal testing is both cruel and unreliable. There are many alternatives to animal testing that would be safer for humans and animals alike. Although it cannot be completely eliminated at this point of time, steps need to be taken to minimize animal experimentation as much as possible.
Throughout history, animal testing has always been a controversial and sensitive topic. It can easily receive much hate as well as praise which could be accounted for by many different factors. Animal testing is such a broad idea that can be misconceived in multiple ways such as unethical animal breeding, mutations, or cruel product testing. Yet, that is not the case at all since animal testing could also have a positive and beneficial outcome to which helps people in society. While there are many controversial thoughts on the many different factors that apply to animal testing, I find it to be that many of the pros outweighs the costs that comes animal testing such as the ethical or moral reason. Although when including the ethical or
Have you ever looked into the eyes of an innocent animal? How much harm can they do to you? Picture yourself being this helpless animal; you are being put into different rooms for horrific experiments. Scientists are holding you down carelessly, injecting unknown chemicals into your system, and causing nothing but pain and distress. Then you ask yourself, what did I do to end up in here? When you look around, there are many others just like you. You feel as if your life is insignificant. The sad truth is that, Animal Experimentation (AE) is used for human benefit only, not caring that these harmless animals have feelings just like the rest of us. Testing cosmetics, drugs, and dangerous treatments on animals is unfair. Although animal testing has improved medical progress, experimenting on an animal should be prohibited because animals react differently than humans, the costs of these experiments are outrageous, and it is unethical.
In some ways I be-live animal testing should be illegal but I also feel like it should be legal. In order to solves the worlds problems you have to start small. Like what if you wanted to see a hybrid of animals you would have to take a sample of DNA from one animal and put it into another animal. so for example what if you have a three legged mouse and you know lizards limbs grow back so you would take a sample of the lizard and insert it into a mouse. So that is starting small. And what if your testing is good then .You would move up to something larger like a three legged cat then dog then horse. And imagine if all your resolute have been a success you would like to try it on a humans.
