In our constitutional system, President’s aren’t required to make changes according to the voice of the people. But, I think Presidents should listen to the voice of the people. Obviously they are there to make decisions that they feel are the best for the country moving forward, but I feel the most important thing is to make our citizens happy first. The way this will happen is for the President to start listening to the voice of the people to an extent. This feeling of being ignored is created by the electoral college. Although filtering between the President and the people is good, it is important to listen to the voice of the people for they are what makes American great. In the recent Presidential Election Donald Trump was elected. Though he was criticized and ridiculed I think the reason he was elected was because he listens to the voice of the people. In the second presidential debate he said “I will be a President to all of our people” (Transcript of second debate) rather than I saying he will be a President to our country. This to me infers that he will listen to the voice of the people and hear their opinion. This doesn’t mean he will listen and change every idea that the people …show more content…
Though it is a great system and has worked for years it diminishes peoples votes but more importantly their voice. Think of when a President wins the popular vote but loses the overall election. What does this do to the people? It creates a sense of disengagement, feeling ignored, and eventually feeling like their vote has no value whatsoever. With the removal of the electoral college from the presidential election process it restores the importance of the right to vote. People will then see the importance of the political system and allowing their voices to be heard. In turn the President will feel more compelled to listen to the voice of the people knowing he was directly elected by
Firsts of All, The President is suppose to help our country and make it a sastainable and healthy place for
so the president must mobilize the electorate to pressure Washington elites to submit to the president’s leadership.
Currently, many believe that the Electoral College is outdated and the general public does not support it overall. In order to solve this problem, the College should not be abolished altogether as others have proposed in the past, as that solution is too quick to be swatted down. Instead the College should be altered to further reflect modern times and the need for the popular vote to mean more. This amendment would bring reassurance to the general public, including the country’s differing demographics, such as the white working class. All could therefore be convinced that their votes matter. More people would then go to the polls. Once more citizens voted, then an administration that is trusted would be in office and could continue work to better strengthen and reinvigorate our
Thus, some believe that since, “the Founders created a two-step, state-based election process known as the Electoral College,” that the U.S. will be defying the constitution if the Electoral College is abolished (England). Additionally, the founding fathers of America created the Electoral College to benefit America by forming a system to help ensure that whoever is elected capable. Moreover, “James Madison’s famous Federalist No. 10 makes clear that the Founders fashioned a republic, not a pure democracy.” (Samples). Therefore, the founding fathers did not envision the United States to be a direct democracy, so technically the popular vote does not matter in terms of a presidential election. However, it is 239 years later and the country is not the same as the founding fathers created and they knew that is would change, so they made sure that the constitution is flexible. Thus, as more elections alike 2016 occur and as more people become hostile, there must be a change to ensure the country does not divide. Furthermore, if the Electoral College is abolished, many believe that “they will be taking America further away from its roots as a constitutional republic,” therefore disobeying the foundations of the country (Samples). Nonetheless, as the world changes and the country grows, there must
The Electoral College is currently the system the United States employs to elect our president. However, the Electoral College should be abolished due to the fact that it can go against the choices of the majority of people, it brings too much attention to swing states and states with large populations, and it annihilates political equality. First of all, the Electoral College goes against the will of several citizens. There have been five instances (including the 2016 elections) in which the candidate who won the popular vote did not become the president. According to Doc.
The Electoral College is a system that creates a compromise between the election of the president by a vote in congress and a popular vote from the citizens of the U.S. This results in a total of 538 electors from congress and to win the presidential election you must have over 270 Electoral votes. There is people who do not like the electoral college because the system is old fashioned and not democratic according to the two articles In Defense of the Electoral College by Richard A. Posner and Time to End the Electoral College by The New York Times. There is people who do agree with the Electoral College process. The Electoral College should not be abolished because the system gives an opportunity to political parties to express themselves in the American government, gives small states a chance in the elections, and the system is determined by the constitution. If presidential candidate does not get over 270 votes then the House of Representatives decides with votes from the top three other presidential candidates with the most electoral votes and same goes for vice presidential election except Senate decides with only top two.
Power, authority and governance can have a major impact on a government and the citizens living under that government. Just like these concepts play a major role in the development of a nation, so does a President. Once the United States Constitution was ratified, the American experiment began. The first Presidents had to go through many adversities and had to overcome them. There were several events that increased American moral which contributed to the growth of the U.S and it was up to the early Presidents to act in the best interest of the new nation. Throughout the history of the United States, the presidents had made choices that had both a negative and positive outcome. There are arguments and debates about how the effect of a President's
Today the Electoral College is used to find out who becomes president. The Electoral College system is used in most states and this means that everyone who is eligible to vote can go vote in the state that they live in and then the majority vote for that certain state gets all the electoral college votes which is what counts more. Different states have a different number of electoral votes depending on the state’s population. The system that is being used is unfair to the independent candidate and bigger states, therefore the Electoral College should be abolished.
The electoral college is a system that was put in place by the framers of the constitution for many reasons. The main reason the electoral college is that the framers did not fully trust democracy for they believed that people were not educated enough to vote. After reading an article from Business Insider called The Electoral College Is Brilliant, And We Would Be Insane To Abolish It by Walter Hickey, I agree that the electoral college is necessary for our presidential elections. According to the article the electoral college is good because it keeps errors local, is a testament to a candidate's desire to win, and most importantly, forces majority. In the article opposing the Electoral College I found many of the arguments to be invalid or full of what ifs or buts, and that is why I do not have any reason to believe the electoral college is good.
In today’s day and age the general population is not afraid of a tyrant figure coming into office. We are so used to being a free state that it almost seems impossible for this to happen, the media would hopefully expose any candidate that has a dictator like mentality. It also adds an unfair aspect to the election, with the winner takes all system that many states have. This system allows one state to use all of its elector votes on one candidate who got the majority of the votes instead of going by population. This had a major impact on the 2000 presidential election, when George Bush “lost the popular vote but captured enough states to win the electoral vote” (Digital History p.2). Bush was able to do this by winning some larger states with a slight margin, and then getting all of the electoral votes with the winner takes all system. “The current system disenfranchises some presidential voters in winner-take-all states and should thus be reformed”
The Electoral College has been disliked by many but also liked by other brilliant people in the United States. Some People have wanted to abolish the Electoral College. Former presidents and American leaders have thought that the Electoral College is a good way to take some power away from the people. The Electoral College has also been a very good way to elect this great country's leader. The Electoral College is here to stay. The founders of the Constitution agree and didn’t want the people to vote on the president directly. Why don’t you?
When it comes to voting for a president in an election, there are two factors that need to be considered: the popular vote and the Electoral College. Many people believe that the Electoral College provides absolute certainty of the outcome, but do the state electors actually provide a voice for the people? There is no doubt the people are the ones who vote for the electors so the desired vote could be made by them; however, the voters have no power over whom the electors decide to vote for. In reality, the electors are the ones who choose who will be president, not the people. Therefore, there should be a change to election by popular vote for the President of the United States so that everyone’s vote begins to count.
The Electoral College is a group of people who are “appointed by a larger group” of people to represent each state in the U.S. who then vote for the presidential elections (Dictionary.com 2015). The founding fathers created the Electoral College so that qualified citizens could vote for the president. They believed that the average American is uniformed, so they decided that a few educated people would make the correct choice for the entire population. The founding fathers also thought the Electoral College would be effective because at that time the only way of communication was through word of mouth and through letters. With the Electoral College, it was a more simple way to get the votes to one place and count them. A major criticism of the Electoral College is the popular candidate may lose to the electoral vote. This means that if majority of the population voted for candidate A, but majority of the electoral votes were for candidate B, the president of the nation would become candidate B. This situation has occurred four out of the fifty-six presidential elections that have been held in the United States. I believe that the Electoral College should be abolished so that the popular candidate would win the election, people would feel that they are making a difference in the society they live in, and we should replace the Electoral College with popular choice or allow our house of representatives to vote for the presidents instead.
When the Electoral College was put in place as part of the voting process it seemed a good idea. “Our framers distrusted democracy and saw the Electoral College as a deliberative body able to correct bad choices made by the people.” (Anderson 519). Times have changed and today’s society is a lot different that it was when George Washington was President. It’s about time that the U.S eliminates the Electoral College and makes America more of a democracy by making the popular vote the deciding factor in electing the president.
The phrase “Make your voice heard and vote!” is always being tossed around. What they people don 't know is that your voice isn 't always heard. Your presidential vote doesn 't really matter because of the electoral college. They make the choice of what your state wants. What you want! People are being silenced for whom they want to become president and believe they are living in a county with a democratic government. And with the removal of the electoral college, we can be heard.
