School uniforms For or against school uniforms? Why should school uniforms be a requirement? Composed of a blazer, tie, pant, sweater, shirt, or a T-shirt for boys, and of a skirt or a dress, a sweater, or a T-shirt for girls, school uniforms not only provide a sense of belonging to an academic institution, but also of togetherness. They appeared for the first time in the 16th century and was only adopted by the poorest schools to solve the issue of economic status among students. Although this may be true, today this practice is widespread indeed given the fact that students are increasingly rowdy, violent, undisciplined, and sometimes choose their school outfits according to their violent recreational activities. With the introduction of a mandatory policy on uniforms for all students in our schools, it was noted that not only the school crime rate, the number of violence, the rate of tardiness, and the suspension rate dropped, but also the students’ intellectual performance improved, and the economic status problem solved. As an illustration, I interviewed a couple of parents who have children in schools where uniforms are mandatory. According to them, since the implementation of this policy, they saw an overall improvement of the school environment, and a sense of togetherness among students. With all the violence happening in our school today, it is important to realize that uniforms will help not only identify quickly people who do not belong on campus, but also differentiate students from others in an emergency. These uniforms also create a fair learning milieu for all students, eliminate the issue of peer pressure on those trying to “fit in” and create an equal look for all
