Why We Should Violate The School Dress Codes

School dress codes shame students and teach other children that is okay to judge and harass young women

How do you feel when you get in trouble at school for trying to express who you really are with the clothes you just bought and you thought looked really cool in, but turned out it was breaking the dress code, you feel embarrassed right? Well, all schools have a dress code of some sort whether it's a uniform, or you can and can't wear certain clothes. Schools should not have dress codes because students can easily find a loophole in dress code rules, they don't let people express who they are, and uniforms are expensive. These dress codes schools use are to keep people from being bullied. The only problem is the girls are getting targeted more because they wear tank tops with spaghetti straps and leggings so the schools banned them. It's unfair

Why can't people be happy in their own skin and feel confident in what they’re wearing? Why don't schools let both boys and girls wear what they want? Of course, school dress code is more lenient on boys than on girls. Why can't girls wear crop tops to school without being sent to the office and being asked to change their shirt? And also not having to be getting judged by everything that they’re wearing. Dress code may have made a lot of people not be happy with their own body, and have low self esteem, because school dress code has made them not feel comfortable in their favorite shirt or shorts etc. Everyone should have the right to wear what they want, even though there is limits students. Now granted, students should also understand that there are things that are inappropriate, but they should atleast be able to go to school and feel happy that, throughout the day they can have a good normal day at school without the students having to go to the office.

Any girl that has ever attended public school knows about the struggle of a dress code. On those hot days as the school year approaches, girls pour over their closets trying to find an outfit they won’t get called out for or sweat to death in. All their dresses are too revealing, their shorts too short, and their shirts reveal way too much shoulder—or so the schools say. Girls have been attacked time and time again with dress codes. Policies are almost always directed strictly towards girls; some even specify for girls only. These dress codes are not only sexist towards women, but they limit female’s freedom of expression and their choice to feel comfortable, and they do not teach female’s to have self confidence.

The people who are in charge of creating the school dress code don’t think of girls feelings, or their need to be an individual. There are also some unnecessary rules in schools, and what schools deemed inappropriate or distracting. The schools are taking some of the girls rights away. I believe that the dress code for the younger generation is too focused on girls, and it’s way too strict. Students should not have to wear school uniforms, some schools went for believing it would get rid of competition.

Is there anything more embarrassing than being dress coded at school? Enforcing a dress code among children is unfair because it not only discriminates against people but it destroys someone’s whole day. Dress codes and school uniforms are meant to increase student achievement and make everyone equal but instead it only hurts people. Most school dress codes are unnecessary and are sexist. Enforcing dress codes is suppose to boost student achievement but instead is racist, sexist and unnecessary. Schools should take into consideration their student 's feelings before they establish rules for dressing.

First and foremost why schools should have a no-strict dress code is because it brings girls self-esteem down. When girls get dress coded they might feel: sad, angry, annoyed and upset. And especially body shamed. “As a women, I know almost no women who like their body, who feel good about there body, almost none, but you don’t know how it got there,” Perlman said in an interview. As a result, Dress codes are body shaming girls from when they were in their teens, to adulthood. The average number of girls getting dressed coded has increased by 20% in the past year! That’s crazy! About most of the dress code, girls feel body shamed! One 15-year-old girl said, “I feel bad because it's my body... and there's no reason for the school to be telling me to cover up,” she said. In April 2015, a Texas honors student was sent home for wearing yoga pants and an oversized shirt that covered her entire backside. In August, a Kentucky student was sent home for showing her collarbone. After her mother brought a scarf to cover her neck, the administration still deemed it “inappropriate.” In Indiana, a 12-year-old student was suspended and missed two days of class. The offense: tight pants. Other dress-code violations include baring shoulders, wearing a tank top, or exposing a bra strap. Should girls have to miss out on some of their education because of a collarbone or tight pants? These are parts of our bodies that are “distracting”. Should girls feel shamed about their bodies? However should school be an appropriate environment?

“School officials have a responsibility to provide a safe, secure, and productive learning environment.” Therefore, schools have dress codes because the safety of students is very important. A teacher’s number one priority is their student’s safety and to have a good learning environment. All students should have the same right to their education. Is the clothing the students wear distracting others from learning? It is distracting to others, but that is not the only reason why schools have dress codes. Schools also have dress codes because it helps prevent students from being bullied based on their clothing, especially if they wear something offensive or inappropriate. It also helps them prepare for professional environments as adults in the workplace.

School dress codes send a loud and clear message, “Your individuality is inconvenient.” (Rowland 22). The constitution guarantees the right to free speech,which can be interpreted as the right to freedom of self expression, and students use clothing to express themselves. Another message that dress codes send is that “the self identity that you want to express does not belong here.” Self expression is not an inconvenience or a distraction, it is the lifeblood of our nation. (Rowland 22). Schools tell students that they should be confident in themselves, but how can they if they cannot express themselves? School dress codes now are more about shielding the boys then protecting the girls which implies that boys are immature. Calling a girl’s clothes distracting is implying that she is at fault for any disruptions. “That 's like saying that because a store has a cash register, it 's the store 's fault if it gets robbed!” (Menza 1). Students are going to be distracted anyways. Sexist dress codes are like saying that an article of clothing, or a body part showing on a female will distract male students from learning. Dress codes should be simple for both genders, everyone should wear clothing that covers up the same area. With dress codes, students are forced to dress the same as other students, taking the individuality out of school, but schools try to send the message, you are individual. Conclusively, there are many more important reasons why schools in our country should adapt school dress codes. The schools that participate in the traditional wearing of uniforms, are getting a jump start in the countless number of advantages schools can get to help up their statistics. Learning that there are many minor issues of the judgmental side of the dress code, a few more issues come from the simple fact of students not having to worry about what they are wearing the next day. Additionally, teachers would not have to anguish about getting on the students about their dressing habits. Likewise, not only the teachers, but the parents as well would have a much more relaxing day and would imply the skills that the students need to help

In a specific article posted by The Atlantic, a middle school student named Maggie Sunseri realized that her school’s dress code had a major difference for males and females. She mentions, “I’ve never seen a boy called out for his attire even though they also break the rules.” I also agree with her on this. Although I went to a catholic school where we had to wear our school uniforms, I constantly see all over social media how girls are treated differently for breaking the policy. I have seen that girls are sent home for showing their shoulders, collar bones, for wearing their skirts too short, or for even wearing leggings because it is too tight against their skin.

All anyone ever hears about these days is the way people dress and what’s appropriate and what’s not. It’s all a matter of opinion. At least that’s what they all say, until someone gets busted for dress code at school. Then all of the sudden it doesn’t matter what anyone 's opinion is. It 's the opinion of the person doing the dress code busting. So many schools across the country have established a dress code policy these days, some being mediocre and others taking it to the extreme. One outfit could be revealing to teacher A, and that same outfit could be considered perfectly fine to teacher B. After all it is a matter of opinion but the person who catches the dress code “violation” is the one in the end who gets to decide, so no one else’s opinions end up mattering. Dress code shouldn’t be becoming so important though and teachers and staff members shouldn’t need to make clothing more important than the education of students. It should not be this way and some things need to be changed.

Why Student Dress Codes Should Be Limited Dress codes date back to the time of kings and queens. They were made to control what the people wore, what colors they could wear, and what style of clothing certain groups of people could and could not wear. Student dress codes are put in place to help keep a safe and comfortable learning environment, no matter what gender, race, religion, sexuality etc. They unfairly control what students can and can not wear. Although student dress codes have good intentions, they are unfair and need to be limited because they are too strict on female students, take students out of class and send them down the wrong path, and teach girls the wrong things.

One of the challenges I face in this school is the dress code. I think the dress code is ridiculous, unnecessary, and not fair. One of the ways dress code is not fair is the only dress code girls that are mainly in the 7th grade, and the boys could come to school with tank tops and shorts, and no one would care. As soon as a girl wears a shirt that has a 2 inch wide strap, all of the principles overreact, because it is “distracting.” Instead of dress coding the girls, they should educate these young boys on how to behave, and how to properly treat girls.
