Normally elephants roam up to, if not more than, 30 miles a day and they socialize with up to 20 other elephants a day. While in captivity, elephants are not experiencing their lives the way they should. If an elephant is in an exhibit that is too small for them, they can develop serious health issues such as, foot problems, arthritis, and even premature deaths. Most zoos aren't equipped to take care of elephants like they should. Lemonick discusses zoos across the country that have stopped exhibiting elephants altogether, due to severe issues seen in elephants.

For many centuries, zoos have served as a way of both educating and entertaining various audiences around the world. However, many ethical and moral concerns have arisen recently regarding the manner in which the animals in these facilities are treated. Zoos disregard the rights of animals because the audiences and employees treat them poorly and animals are unable to thrive in the small enclosures. Journalist Michelle Carr is correct in her claim about the harsh reality of zoos. Even though authors Leslie Kaufman and John Pickrell are accurate when they claim that many zoos serve as educational and conservational institutions, this does not excuse the fact that zoos take advantage of animals in order to make money.

In the United Kingdom there was a welfare concern for all of the elephants. 75% of elephants were overweight, only 16% could walk normally, and solitary 20% of the elephants were free of foot problems. For all of these reasons, in my opinion I think there should not be zoos. The wild animals should not be taken from their original homes. Crazy and dangerous animals could escape and attack or even kill people. Some of the foods that wild animals like to eat might not get to eat those foods. You might not think so, but I really think that there should not be

Zoos provide protection for animals. Some hunters may kill animals in the wild for their skin so they can sell it. In a zoo, this can never occur.
