Why You Should Go To College

Mr. Feldman presents a very good point in “WHY GO TO COLLEGE?,” by stating that students that settle for a high school diploma or less, will not go as far, or reach their full potential. Students tend to get excited when they enter high school, thinking “yes! Only four more years to go! No more test! No more evil teachers! NO MORE SCHOOL!” But can you imagine just hopping from one dead end job to another? How does having two jobs sound like to you? Well from my experience I can honestly say I disliked it. I did not make more money by having the second job, if anything I missed out on family events, and the people that really mattered. Sure most jobs only require a high school diploma but what kind of job is it? Are you happy? Can you retire?

College? The one place where many people hardly decide about going to have a better education to start their lives? Why should you go to college? One article published by Holly Epstein Ojalvo, she based her article about Dale J. Stephens who is the founder of “UnCollege.” Stephens made “UnCollege” for individuals to find their own way to success without college. Another news writer Jennifer Ludden, published a different article “Going to College May Cost You, But So Will Skipping It.” Ludden’s article was completely financial. Ludden describes the different between attending college and missing it. Ludden talks about a gap between college and non-college students. How an average college graduate makes about $17,500 per year and that gaps keeps increasing yearly.

College is a very important stepping stool to your future, too your life. Others might say it’s not worth the money, that plenty of people were successful without college, I disagree. Only very small hand full of people make it without a degree.

The belief that everyone should go to college strives from the fact that in many circumstances a college degree entails a higher paying job and thus a better financial situation. The essay “Should Everyone go to College” discusses this matter in a variety of ways, ranging from financial breakdown by private and open enrollment of schools to likelihood of individuals finishing their degrees.

Should everyone go to college? In this article, written by authors Stephanie Owen and Isabelle Sawhill, they discuss some of the reasons why the isn’t a need for everyone to go to college. They explain how the rate of return on education is not evenly distributed amongst all degree fields, for a four-year degree, and how the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and medical) fields have a more substantial rate over return, as compared to the other degree programs, for the students who choose careers in those fields. In this article, they also discuss the importance of deciding what college institution to seek out when pursuing a degree, and how attending a non-specialized institution could, in some instances, de-value the degree. In the closing statements of the article they describe alternative solutions for students, explaining how without a four-year degree students can still obtain a career and make decent salaries through vocational oriented, or career specific technical training. After reading this article written by Stephanie Owen and Isabelle Sawhill, I agree with their standpoint about should everyone go to college; however, in criticism of the article, I feel there should have been more emphasis on the alternative methods of achieving education through different programs and institutions.

I am in support of Students going to college because it leads to individuals being successful in life, helps build and discover knowledge and skills, and open more job opportunities.

Not all jobs require college. Yes, it’s a good idea to continue one’s education but it depends on the career. Even though, in the article, “Is College Worth It?”, by The Costco Connection, it explains that some jobs “can be performed by someone without a college degree” meaning that one does not have to go to college for a certain job. I would like to attend college because I want to be able to demonstrate not only to myself but to my family that we can do what we set ourselves to do.
