Why should we let Congress take away our firearms? Is there some sort of amazing benefit to society that we cannot possibly achieve unless we place a ban on firearms? Just think about the results. There would be chaos throughout the entire nation, the crime rate would increase dramatically, and society would be taking a turn for the worse. I believe that Congress and the United States government should keep away from issues dealing with firearms. Before I begin stating why these things would occur, let me give a brief history on gun control programs that date back to when crossbows were still a reliable weapon in warfare. In the year 1215, King John made an attempt to to exercise complete and total gun control on both nobles and serfs, …show more content…
Gun control is, put simply, damaging our rights. It has been shown countless times in history that gun control has little to no positive effect on crime in the area that the gun control was implemented. In some cases, crime rates actually rose in those areas. In modern American society, there are several statistics that can prove my viewpoint on this topic as the proper one. A survey of over 18 thousand prison inmates showed that 30% of state offenders and 35% of federal offenders were in the possession of a firearm while committing the crime. Another survey of inmates convicted of felons throughout 11 state prisons had stated that 34% had been “scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured” by an armed would-be victim. 69% knew someone that had been. On another note, there were 40% of these felons that made the choice not to commit a crime due to an armed person in the vicinity. In 2008, over 5 million violent crimes, including rape, assault, and murder occurred in the United States. However, only 8% of offenders were visibly armed with a gun. And while I'm on the topic of violent crimes, only 1 in 12 offenders are sentenced to prison (Agresti). In order to raise the number of criminals that are caught, and to discourage others, I believe that we need to raise the amount of firearms owned by innocent civilians. There are 300 million firearms owned by U.S. citizens. 100 million of these are handguns. A staple of the
To begin with, gun control laws aren’t doing any good in their current state. In fact, from a study done from 1980 to 2009 “assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level.” This reveals us that it isn’t the laws that are in control, it is the people that are in control. To elaborate, another study found that “states with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes.” With crime rates dropping the deaths and injury rates dropped an “average of 90 percent.” In addition to less crime, one law passed by the government was for civilians to conceal carry, which means to carry a firearm undetected. This law being passed is what caused the drop in crime and violence, and again seeing as how a law for gun carriage is good, it is shown how it is on the people to make the right decisions. So, if there wasn’t a law for concealed carry, there may be more accidents. There may be a scenario in which a bank is being robbed, if and when a civilian is there to incapacitate the perpetrator, no harm will occur to the surrounding audience (Gun Control).
In the end, all gun control accomplish is keeping guns out of the hands of those who buy them legally, which includes almost no criminals. Since they don’t follow the law anyway, more laws only hinder law abiding people whose only wish is to defend themselves. Background checks are too easy for most criminals to pass, proving that not even the law can stop them. This causes the innocent people to be defenseless and the criminals to rule. Not only do gun control advocates wish to revoke the people’s rights to the second amendment, they also wish to leave citizens at the mercy of their enemies. No substantial reason for gun control exists. It fails to control criminals and crime, while taking guns from law-abiding Americans.. Even if laws did
Gun Control is a debatable method to reduce gun violence and many people 's perspectives vary. “Gun control is a broad term that covers many kinds of restrictions. It can include regulations about what firearms can be bought and sold and who can and can’t possess them or sell them and also the ammunition that you have to buy” (New York Times). However, Gun Control is a horrific method to resolve Gun Violence this opinion has been proven by numerous professionals. Gun Control is an awful method because it didn 't work in other countries, People that shouldn 't possess guns will still have access to them, and Guns break the second amendment and violent people 's sense of safety.
Some of the reasons for gun control are that it will help the government get a control on us.Hitler in world war 2 used gun control against the jewish people to better control and corral them. Historians have documented most everything about it except what made it so easy to attack the defenseless Jews without fear of resistance. Their guns were registered and thus easily confiscated.(stephen halbrook)If the government started registering guns and know their location left and right they could overthrow us with a flick of their wrist. Imagine your local police coming to your doorstep in your house and taking your only good form of self defense. Then turning right around and kidnapping your children and kids and including yourself.I mean
According to a Washington News article, “In America there are approximately 270 million firearms owned by civilians, and only 897,000 are carried by police officers. 60 percent of people killed by guns die by suicide. According to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Suicide is the second most common cause of death for Americans between 15 & 34”(Washington P,2015) . Guns have led to many controversies, disputes, and over all lifestyle of the average civilians. Gun laws are the main cause of many violent crimes in America and need to be changed so that it is more difficult to obtain guns making it a safer environment to live in.
Have you ever thought about all of the serious rules that go along with gun control? Most people don’t actually know all of the rules and instead just believe guns are either a necessity or dangerous and should have never been invented. In reality, there are a lot of deciding factors on why there are so many rules about gun control. The rules to carry guns are very important but so is why Gun possession is such a big deal, and why People with mental illness cannot carry guns. All of these main points should be your deciding factor of whether or not you believe gun control is good or bad.
There is a difference between gun control and self protection. Self protection is one of the main reason people buy guns. But it can sometimes hurt the people around you. Like if you're keeping the gun in your house and you have children. They could somehow get a hold to it. Its important to keep it out of reach of children. Lots of killing is due to gun control. More than 30,000 are killed by firearms each year in this country. The average number of guns per owner has increased from 4.1 in 1994 to 6.9 in 2004. More than 10,000 are gun homicides. The right to bear arms according to the Second Amendment has been a big issue for many years in American
Making and passing strict gun-control laws will not make our nation safer nor more protected by no means. Did you know there was a study published in the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy proving that nations that have more guns tend to have less crime? Gun controls laws are too cruel. People should be aloud to obtain guns. Gun-related crime has been depleting in recent years, gun control laws discourage the right to self defense and even the second amendment proves this.

Before I get into the pros and cons of gun control, we should look at some of the facts concerning gun ownership. It has been estimated that “the total number of guns both licit and illicit held by civilians in the United States is 270,000,000 to 310,000.” (Hoyet, p.1) Private gun ownership tends to be somewhat surprising. “It is estimated that “the rate of private gun ownership both licit and illicit in the united States is 101.05 firearms per 100 people. (p.1). Civilian ownership is
You hear people every day emphasizing the importance of gun control questioning if the guns are helpful tool or rather killing machines and how the government should ban the guns. If you think of the matter in a logical and realistic way you would realize that most criminals do not have licenses to carry a weapon, none the less a legal and registered weapon. Actually, I think that the majority of people that would be affected by banning guns are the victims that would have been capable of defending themselves only if they had weapons to do so. Also people who own guns could protect innocents around them
Gun control is one of the biggest issues in America. Alfred Blumstein states, “As Americans, violence is a priority in everybody’s concerns in this country.” America is fighting a constant battle against crime and violence in this country. Murder is one of the biggest incidents happening on a daily basis in this country. 70% of homicides are reported to have some sort of firearm used in the crime. The depressing truth is that gun violence is increasing in young teens. Since 1985 people younger than the age of 18 committing murders has doubled and a big factor in this gun outbreak is due to gang violence, which is main reason in the rate of gun homicides. Law enforcement has been trying to contain these gangs and to keep firearms off of the streets and out of the hands of the wrong people. There are studies being tested and researched if gun control will reduce the number in homicides in the United States. People should care about a controversial topic such as this because in some cases it is a matter of life and death. What if you are being attacked and have no way of defending yourself? A gun can be a matter of protection from being the victim of a crime. Guns are one of the biggest threats in this country; however, they are also one of the biggest crime deterrents as well. I believe enforcing a strict gun control will worsen the effects of homicide in the United States for several reasons. First it would leave people to be defenseless against crimes. Secondly, criminals
“Gun control” is a term that is used when talking about any kind of restrictions on what kinds of firearms can and cannot be sold and bought, who can own or sell them, where and how they are stored or carried and what obligations both buyers and the sellers have to report transactions to the government (Pérez-peña). Citizens should be able to keep their guns because just banning guns is ineffective, taking away handguns does not deter crime, and prohibiting guns goes against the 2nd Amendment.
But that all may change if we ban guns and other firearms. Banning firearms opens up space for harmful governments to take over our country. The writer of the Declaration of Independence and America’s third president, Thomas Jefferson said that “the strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in the government. ” There has been multiple instances around the world in which a country was taken over by dictators and tyrants, and if guns and other firearms are banned in America, our country has the chance of ending up like those countries. If you take away the Second Amendment, which is the amendment that guarantees our right to bear arms, all of the other amendments have the chance of being taken away from us, and you won’t be able to do anything about it because we will have no firearms to fight back. If it has been working fine for over 200 years, then it should not be changed (“Why was the Second Amendment written, and why is it still important
How many of you, have ever been robbed at gunpoint? When I was about seventeen years old, I became a victim of an armed robber, in a small town called Hoboken in New Jersey. Now, New Jersey has some of the strictest gun laws in the entire United States, and many people believe that these laws keep us safe from such an encounter. I found out the hard way that these gun control laws are not meant to protect law-abiding citizens. My perpetrator belonged to a local gang, and gun control laws did not stop him or any of the other members of his gang from obtaining a gun. Gang violence is a serious issue significantly contributing to violent crime, including homicides. Gun control will not stop any criminal in the future from obtaining and using a gun. Criminals buy most of their guns illegally, not through the conventional way of going through the local gun dealer, this makes tracing these guns almost impossible. Harsher, mandatory sentences for anyone that commits a crime with a gun, would deter many criminals from committing such offenses. Knowing that you can be put away for life if you own a gun illegally, would stop many crimes and deaths from occurring. Criminals by nature do not respect laws, so it would not matter to them if guns were illegal or not. Law-abiding citizens would then be left defenseless, and disarmed if gun control were to become an actual law.
