Beowulf Essay Beowulf lived at the time of the Anglo-Saxons in England. They treasured their warriors as heroes who followed a heroic code. This code exemplifies what the qualities of a hero should be. He also believes in fate and how God will let him succeed These qualities include strength, courage, loyalty, wisdom, and humility. These are all traits that Beowulf possesses. Along with these heroic qualities some of his flaws are his desire for fame and his rash decision to fight the dragon that could've ended without an heir if Wiglaf hadn't been so loyal. The traits of a heroic warrior are usually courage, bravery, and strength. Throughout all his battles, Beowulf shows hows he has earned all these tremendous traits. Courage and bravery are traits warriors must need when facing an enemy in battle or might need when having to make simple decisions on what is the right thing to do. He is first loyal to his king of the Geats, Hygelac. He is also loyal to his clan, his family. This is the reason why he decided to go to Denmark to help King Hrothgar, because King Hrothgar helped Beowulf’s father with a blood feud by paying off the other side. Even then with that little loyalty, Beowulf eventually looks up to Hrothgar as a father figure or mentor after killing Grendel and his mother. Wiglaf eventually becomes the same type of position as Beowulf. Beowulf took Wiglaf under his wing just like Hrothgar, and this is probably one of the reasons that Beowulf named him as his successor. Wiglaf, who tells Beowulf “I shall stand by you,” (Beowulf 2668) is the only one with enough loyalty to Beowulf to come to his rescue even after all the other men turned on Beowulf when Beowulf went to fight the dragon.
