Many carnivorous, wild cats http://www.care2.com/causes/the-worlds-rarest-big-cat-is-making-a-comeback.html can only be found in the island of Borneo. http://www.care2.com/causes/encounter-with-extinct-rhino-in-borneo-brings-hope-for-their-survival.html But new research shows that we're losing them at an alarming rate: half of these majestic cats are expected to go extinct -- unless we act now. http://www.care2.com/causes/this-shy-yellow-eyed-penguin-is-headed-toward-extinction.html
A Roadmap to Hope?
An international team of researchers is trying to save the cats from sure doom. The German Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Species Survival

But we know that over 45 percent of protected wetlands in Southeast Asia are threatened (and that's a conservative estimate), reports the IUCN Red List. http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/18148/0
This habitat loss and degradation are driving the flat-headed cat towards extinction. Other threats include: http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/18148/0
clearance of coastal mangroves; depletion of fish prey; increased palm oil plantations; trapping; snaring; poisoning.
Bay Cat
The Endangered bay cat's survival depends on its forest habitat. But rampant deforestation is destroying the bay cat in the process. According to the IUCN Red List, http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/4037/0 "if current deforestation rates continue, [Borneo's forest cover] is projected to decline from 50% to less than one-third by 2020." Consequently, the bay cat's population is projected to decline ">20%" over the next two generations, or 12 short years. The expansion of oil palm plantations and commercial logging are destroying the bay cat's habitat. The rare cat is exploited by the pet and wildlife trades.

An Australian study shows that cats help some endangered animals survive. On Australian islands where cats were eliminated, rat populations rose exponentially. Rats are notorious for eating bird eggs, and a result bird populations on those islands were becoming extinct. They also increase biodiversity, because predators are more likely to kill animals that have a higher population. For example, Shrews and birds both
recently become detrimental to many wildlife species. These house cats are responsible for the deaths of
But every year it lose 8.41 millions acres of land due to deforestation and fires. The more the people cut down the trees ,the less habitats animals have .The trees releases air into the atmosphere, so the more they cut the land the less are they have. The increase animal's death would also have a toll in this as well.
This lab report focus on the risk of extinction of the panther species of Florida due to habitat loss (urbanization), collisions road kill, intolerance and poor genetic diversity have been confined to this animal to live in a small part of South Florida become one of the most endangered mammals on the planet. About 160 cats remain in the wild. Therefore the objective of this report is to disseminate knowledge regarding the extinction of native species by identifying the mortality, its causes, area of action, level of ecosystem and possible solutions to prevent their extinction
This species of wild cats has not been confirmed in the United States in nearly three decades. Although, there have been quite a few unconfirmed sightings. A cat of the lowlands, not generally found above 6500 feet, the Gulf Coast Jaguarundi occupy a wide range of both open and closed habitats – from dry scrub, swamp and savannah woodland to primary forest. A factor that is used to establish habitat appropriateness is access to dense ground vegetation. Of all of the New World felines, the Jaguarundi are the most adaptable in its ability to occupy diverse
-We have developed the largest and most advanced monitoring program to more accurately measure cat densities using camera traps to identify individuals. The population of feral cats on Mornington-Marion Downs is estimated at
Together with many wild animals of the world today, the Amur leopard is facing the likelihood of extinction. Their threat is not by means of natural selection or a changing world but by man who has deliberately or unknowingly depleted their habitat and community. Only mans' intervention and realization of the problem can hope to save these animals (Garman 1996). According to Kutscherenko (1995) the wild population of the Amur leopard has dwindled to an estimated 120 to 140 leopards, 30 of which were counted in Russia.
Domestic cats have taken the role of a keystone species in many environments, including human habitations, where they control some rodent populations. Feral cats are known to decimate native populations in many places in which they are introduced.
Iberian Lynx are disappearing, and there are only about 300 left in the wild. They are considered critically endangered. Most are disappearing because of habitat loss, illegal hunting, car hits, and a decreasing food base. There are fears that they may soon become the first cat species to become extinct for 2,000 years. And with only 84 to 134 adult lynx, I would say we need to fix this.
Cats, in some ways, are an invasive species. Cats are not indigenous to the United States and therefore can cause problems to an ecosystem. Even so, they are highly regarded as loveable house pets. Even feral cats are often regarded more highly than other species, as was demonstrated in Stevenson’s case. In a 2005 study published in the journal Ecological Economics, it was estimated that cats cause a total of approximately $17 billion in damages to bird life annually (Pimentel, Zuniga & Morrison, 2005). As is described by authors Pimentel, Zuniga, and Morrison, “This cost does not include the number of birds killed by pet or urban cats, a figure reported to be similar to the number killed by feral cats (McKay, 1996); nor does the cost include the many small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles that are killed by feral and pet cats (Dunn and Tessaglia, 1994)”
The clouded leopard could possibly be saved. There are 10,000 left as of 2015 they are considered critically endangered. They are critically endangered because of Hunting,Poaching, Climate changes, and Human impact are all causes of the population decrease.
The Black Cat, written by Edgar Allen Poe, is a short story about a man, also the narrator, who starts out by living a “happy” life with his wife and favorite black cat, Plato. Although, he begins to be consumed by his drinking and becomes irritable. The black cat used to be by his side but now avoids him. This irritability leads him into becoming overly aggressive, which results in him hurting and murdering the cat. Then, a second cat appears who looks the same as Pluto but with a white spot on his chest. Eventually, the man starts to feel anger towards the cat and attempts to murder him with an axe, but his wife stops him. Unfortunately, his wife was hit in the head. The man then decides to bury his dead wife in his basement wall. He thinks he has got away with murder, but in the end, one learns that he had accidentally buried the cat alive with his wife. The cat reveals his hiding spot when he is caught by the police. Although it seems that the main character has committed these actions solely from alcoholism, it is obvious that there are signs he is also suffering from a mental illness.
Habitat destruction, deforestation, ozone depletion, global warming, and poaching. These actions and ecological happenings are creating a world where animals are going extinct at rapid rates. Our world is on the brink of what scientists believe is the sixth mass extinction. Unlike the five previous mass extinction, the latest one killing a majority of the dinosaurs, the main causes for this current extinction are anthropogenic reasons, not natural events.
Organizations like the WWF, Giant Panda Conservation Centre, as well as the Chinese government are funding more than 50 panda reserves throughout China. Although they have their own UNESCO World Heritage Site designation (the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, which span over seven natural reserves), panda populations will continue to decrease if we continue to encroach on their habitat and pollute their environment.
Global warming is a major problem when providing a suitable habitat and lifestyle for ample marine life. With sea levels rising there are consequences to plant life in coastal wetlands that can not handle the amount of water being provided. The wetlands are important in their job to protect the species they contain and for stabilizing coastlines. Storms are increasing in magnitude and severity, causing the transport of nutrients to marine life to be disturbed. As shores move further inland animals will have to move and adapt, history has shown how this can decrease populations. In the future both rare and abundant species could become locally extinct, with rare species on the verge of becoming totally extinct.
