William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies was set somewhere on the timeline of World War Two, a war between the Axis and the Allies lasting from 1939 until 1945. Although WWII was fought between many countries in the Pacific and Europe, the main contender was Germany, led by Adolf Hitler. Hitler and his followers, the Nazis, changed the lives of everyone when they attempted to strengthen Germany and brought out all the evil and ugliness in the world. After WWII, nothing would be able to change the negative effects brought upon German society.
In the early 1930’s, Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party used the widespread discontent of the German people to gain support from them. There was resentment at the territorial, military, and economical terms of

They proclaimed that the German people were a “master race” and that all non-Germans—especially Jews—were inferior. Over the course of two years, from 1933 to 1935, Hitler was able to get in control and pass the Nuremburg Laws which marked the beginning of an institutionalized anti-Semitic persecution.
After getting full control of the government and eliminating all remaining political opposition, Hitler moved forward with his plans to return Germany to glory. First thing on his mind was to overturn the Versailles settlement. Hitler started rebuilding the military of Germany and other allied and conquered countries, preparing to expand Germany’s territory eastward (History.com). While Hitler moved east, anti-Jewish pogroms erupted across Germany and Austria. Then in November 1938 came Kristallnacht—the “Night of Broken Glass”. It was a state-orchestrated attack on Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues. This resulted in the murder of 91 Jews. Twenty thousand more were arrested and transported to concentration camps, where they would either be killed or put to work for the rest of the war.
By March 1939, Germany had seized all of Czechoslovakia. Hitler now had his eyes set on Poland. After WWI, the Allies cut out the Polish Corridor from German territory, and now Hitler wanted it back (Britannia.com). So Hitler signed a nonaggression pact with Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, in order to invade Poland unopposed.
Similar to most literary classics, William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies contains allusions to the Christian Bible and character archetypes that convey universal ideas. Golding’s story focuses on a group of British schoolboys who are stranded on an island and ultimately succumb to their innate savage tendencies. Literary analysts often compare components of Lord of the Flies to various aspects in the Christian Bible. For instance, the setting in Lord of the Flies is often linked to the Garden of Eden, and some characters are thought to have religious-inspired names. Critics believe Simon’s name originates from Jesus Christ’s disciple, Peter, whose name was originally Simon. Biblical allusions exist throughout the novel associated with
Throughout the history of humanity, humans have different behaviors that change depending on what situations they are in. Psychologist Philip Zimbardo spent many years exploring human nature and has developed many theories about human behavior. One of Zimbardo’s ideas is about situational factors that states “one’s behavior is assumed to be dependent upon their current circumstances, situation or the environment that they are in.” He concluded the concept of situational factors after his Stanford Prison Experiment, in which he gave authority to regular people and observed any changes. The experiment proved that people’s behavior will change when they are in different situations. Zimbardo also believes that evilness is the exercise of power to harm people in anyway possible, so a five year old who teases others to Adolf Hitler would be classified as perpetrators of evil.
The Nazis came into power on the 30th of January, 1933. By that year Hitler had total control over the country. Hitler possessed a dominant presence and was able to get people to listen to him, he was very persuasive in making the Germans believe that the Jews were the problem of Germany. He vowed to use his skill in public speaking and his position in authority and gain political power the right way. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler believed that Jews were an inferior race, alien threat to German racial purity. Anti- Semites such like Hitler believed that the reason for their country’s loss in 1918 were the Jews. Many Jews were killed during the Holocaust, the Nazis tried to keep this operation a secret but was made virtually impossible due to the amount of
Literary devices are techniques often used by authors to portray in-depth analyses of major characters, storylines, and central themes, which take place in a story. These analyses help readers understand a message the author is trying to convey. In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses different literary devices in order to demonstrate the boys’ struggle against the lack of society and law on the island, as well as the consequences that have transpired due to this loss. This conflict is evident through the different instances of irony, foreshadowing, and symbolism that occurs throughout the novel.
Many philosophers believe that a correct government can make a strong society. However, these philosophers do not agree on what form of government is the most “correct”. English philosopher John Locke believed that Man is inherently moral and that the purpose for government is to grant the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to its people. Another philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, however, held the belief that mankind is naturally evil and that society needs an absolute central authority to contain this evilness and grant its people with the common protection. Hobbes believes that in a state of nature, when there are no rules and everyone is granted equal power, the inherent evil impulses of Man are exposed. One
In William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies, a few dozen boys are stranded on an island after a plane crash. The six to twelve year old kids turn to savages under the lead of the older males, and ultimately cause their own deaths. However, the smaller boys, such as Piggy and Sam and Eric, are the hope and reason of the group. Golding’s purpose of writing the book was to show that the defects in society originate at the defects in human nature. Golding allows the little ones to have no identities or personalities. This is symbolically showing that in society, the ignorant and innocent children are the only hope to a humane society. Innocence is purity, and the innocent children, in which are not corrupted by the bad people and things in the
English novelist and politician Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton, once said, “The pen is mightier than the sword.”. We,as humans, have always had the feeling of fear. No matter how many people say they don’t have that feeling, they have it somewhere within them. This fear has always thrived us to think in a radical way and has pushed us to make some good and bad choices in life. Because of this fear human beings have felt the need to protect themselves as much as possible and they believe that by having the most sizable, vigorous, and lavish weapons, they will be safe and protected from all harm and will keep order within society stable. But what Lytton wants us to realize in his quote is that you really don’t
On September 1, 1939, Adolf Hitler and his army of Nazis attacked Poland, marking the first day of six years of war, fear, and suffering. Hitler had long since came to power in Germany. After World War I, Germany was stripped of many things; money, cultural worth, dignity and power. The Germans needed a place to look to for help; they needed a promising future, and Adolf Hitler promised them just that. Blaming the Jewish religion, Hitler began to rise from the masses of Germans. He convinced Germany that the Jews were “untermenschen”, of what roughly translates to in English as “subhuman” or less of a human. So eager for hope of a better way of life, the rest of Germany trusted and gave him the power he needed to carry out multiple acts of destruction.
“Every hand outside the choir except Piggy’s was raised immediately. Then Piggy, too, raised his hands grudgingly into the air” (Golding 23). This is the start of the first conflict between the two.
Following the election of Adolf Hitler in 1933 as Chancellor of Germany, the Jewish population was subjected to a decade of discrimination and cruelty. April 1st of 1933 saw the deliberate instigation of boycotting Jewish businesses by Nazi Stormtroopers. This destruction was then followed by the infamous Nuremberg Laws that were introduced in September of 1935 that would continue throughout Nazi reign. These laws were based upon the conception that Jews were racially unequal and inferior to pureblood Germanic citizens, or ‘Aryans’. These laws included isolating decrees such as: curfews, banning from certain public areas, exclusion from German schools, prohibition of inter-marriage between Jews and Gentiles etcetera. The notion of anti-Semitic policies represents an extension of classical anti-Semitism during the fifth century in which similar policies were introduced in the Edict of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. This establishes that the Nazis were not introducing new concepts but were reiterating ideas from earlier centuries. Nonetheless, these laws highlighted the intensity of Jewish hatred within the political climate of Nazi Germany. The last crucial event that unfolded pre-Final Solution was Kristallnacht. Following the assassination of German Embassy official Ernst Von
Hitler persuaded the German race a little bit more everyday that the Jews were responsible for all of Germany’s failures. Hitler began to establish groups for young children that taught them how to report any un-German behavior. This caused many young children to turn against their own families, neighbors, and friends to ensure a Jewish free race. Anyone reported as being Jewish or helping a Jewish person was sent to concentration camps.
To be an effective society, itś important to have a few key qualities such as teamwork or cooperation and order. These make achieving goals much easier, and in the end, it leads to success by completing the tasks needed to get towards the goal, whether that be obtaining food or conquering an entire continent. In Golding 's Lord of the Flies, a lack of mutual respect between the leaders and followers as well as the failure to unite themselves to work together for the same goals, resulted in chaos, and ultimately, the division and failure of their society on the island.
Hitler's idea of Nazi germany started in 1923 when he made a failed attempt to seize power in munich, he was arrested and sent to prison. While in prison he wrote his Manifesto “Mein Kampf” ( My Struggle), this would become the basic book of Nazi goals and Ideology. Hitler and the Nazi party brought hope to germans suffering from the Great Depression. On the dark side to hitler’s promises was a message of hate aimed particularly at the jewish people. His fanatical anti semitism was set out to drive Jews out of Germany.
from Jewish people as well as remove all their property (Aryrnization). Hitler's goal was to use the legal system to make the
Adolf Hitler came to power over Germany in January of 1933. He hated Jews and blamed them for everything bad that had ever happened to Germany. Hitler’s goal in life was to eliminate the Jewish population. With his rise to power in Germany, he would put into action his plan of elimination. This is not only why German Jews were the main target of the Holocaust, but why they were a large part of the years before, during, and after the Holocaust. Hitler’s “final solution” almost eliminated the Jewish population in Europe during World War II. At the end of the war and along with his suicide, the Jewish population would survive the horror known as the Holocaust and the Jews would eventually find their way back to their homeland of Israel
