Team Jack or Team Ralph? William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a very interesting novel. It shows how humans can lose their minds and become savages. This book also shows how society can be overthrown by human nature. However, above both of these things, Golding demonstrates how hard it is to stay civilized and united against trial and separation. As the book goes along, two tribes rise against each other. Jack Merridew, a boy who was in charge of the hunters, versus Ralph, the voted leader. Selfish desires tore the group of boys apart, and lead them to these different groups. I believe Ralph was the better leader by far. He knew that shelter was important, so he tried to build shelters, but none of the boys helped, except Simon. The shelters did get completed and helped the boys stay cool and rested. Ralph knew that the only way the boys would get off the island was if they had a signal fire. “‘Your only hope is keeping a signal fire going as long as there’s light to see. Then maybe a ship’ll notice the smoke and come and rescue us and take us home. But without that smoke we’ve got to wait till some ship comes by accident. We might wait years;’”(Page 178) The boys did not want to help maintain the fire, which resulted in a missed opportunity for rescue. Instead of realizing their situation, the boys wanted to play and hunt. However, Ralph knew what was best for the boys. Ralph was also a better leader than Jack because he tried to keep sanity. He was relaxed, which calmed the littluns down, and helped Ralph gain trust. “ But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart.”(Page
