One of the most widely notable and legendary storytellers of all time, William Shakespeare hailed from Avon , England in the 1500's. Shakepeare's collection of works consists of a long list of plays, sonnets, poems and novels from several genres that continue to be studied and read over the past several centuries. Amongst the uses of conflict, weapons and tragedy to captivate audiences, another commonly used tactic Shakespeare weaved through many of his works, was the use of mythological creatures and allusions of such, to capture his admirers interest. By bridging real world vs. fantasy, Shakespeare created timeless and myterious realms and stories full of depth that have been celebrated and mimicked for years. He uses them to guide Lady Macbeth in following her ambitions. What distinguishes the Macbeth witches from all other characters in Macbeth, is the fact that they speak in rhyming sentences. Also, the Macbeth witches are described as having beards making it difficult to determine their gender. Shakespeare’s style of writing in Macbeth, poses the thought of whether his reader believes that their lives may already be mapped out, or if they have a say in what happens; thus piquing the audiences curiosity. Shakespeare also uses ghosts in some of his works. In his writings, there are three different varieties of ghosts. The three varieties are the vision or purely subjective ghost; the authentic ghost who died without an opportunity of repentance; and, the false ghost who is capable of many manefestations. The ghosts in Shakespeares earlier writings tend to be loud, obnoxious and very angry, but, towards the end of Shakespeares writing his ghosts had lost their melodrama. Ghosts typically displayed an intention or had a purpose, like in Hamlet. Revenge still had a major role, along with protection of loved ones, burial or a warning for any other characters. In Conclusion, Shakespeare refered to a variety of mythological creatures in many of his plays.
