John Finch and Francesca Annis star in this 1971 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth directed by Roman Polanski. Polanski’s script has brought to live all of the key points of the story, but, he also heightens the violence and shock factor to remind the audience that Macbeth is a dark play with very dark subjects. The movie starts with battle cries as King Duncan’s army fights the enemies and then we see all of the bodies lying on the battlefield. One of the soldiers walks towards a fallen man, makes sure that he is still alive, and proceeds to kill him. From the first sequence we notice that this version of Macbeth retreats a little from creating a creepy magical atmosphere and concentrates on drawing the audience into raw violence of certain specific scenes. The Tragedy of Macbeth narrates the story of young general Macbeth who, after successfully defeating the Irish and Norwegian army for King Duncan, is on his way home and meets three witches. The witches say to Macbeth, who is the thane of Glamis, that he will become thane of Cawdor and that he will rule Scotland. Soon afterwards King Duncan appoints Macbeth thane of Cawdor for his triumph in the war. Macbeth realizes that the witches’ prophecies are becoming true and that he will need to get rid of King Duncan to rule Scotland. With the help of Lady Macbeth, he murders the late King Duncan and takes over the kingdom but he will forever be haunted by delusions of losing the crown. The scene that I enjoyed
