As written above Nicholas Cage states that conflict is a definite part of us, human beings. Louis Aragon once stated that, light is meaningful only in relation to darkness, and truth presupposes error. It is these mingled opposites which people our life, which make it pungent, intoxicating. We only exist in terms of this conflict, in the zone where black and white clash. Literature has played a vital role in an individual’s response to the human condition in relation to conflicts, namely within self, society, environment and spirituality. William Shakespeare explores these types of conflicts in recognizing the state of humanity in a society of power and corruption in his play Hamlet. Hamlet, the protagonist of the play, is involved in a psychological conflict with Claudius and Polonius, his new stepfather, all at once facing internal conflicts between his duty to revenge his father and his reluctance to commit murder and regicide, and the supernatural world.
