Should one of Shakespeare 's most famous plays, Romeo, and Juliet, be removed from the freshman English curriculum? Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare and is a tragic play about two star-crossed lovers. Romeo and Juliet, the two main character, deny their family’s feud and choose to fall in love, but the choices they let others and themselves make lead to their untimely death. The classic play was written in mostly sonnets, a form of poetry and contains most of the English literature devices like figurative language, foreshadowing, imagery, etc... Also, Romeo and Juliet has part of the English curriculum for decades. Romeo and Juliet should still be part of Niles West learning curriculum since it’s still relevant because …show more content…
Lady Capulet enters Juliet 's room and thinks that she’s still crying over Tybalt’s death, but Juliet tries to explain that she’s actually grieving over Romeo’s exile in contradictory words. Juliet says, “Indeed, I never shall be satisfied With Romeo, till I behold him—dead— Is my poor heart for a kinsman vexed. Madam, if you could find out but a man To bear a poison, I would temper it, That Romeo should, upon receipt thereof, Soon sleep in quiet. Oh, how my heart abhors hearing him named, and cannot come to him. To wreak the love I bore my cousin Upon his body that slaughtered him!” (III.v.93-102). In the quote, Juliet says one thing while her mother hears another showing even parents and children sometimes don 't understand each other. Romeo is in Friar Lawrence’s cell after the prince had banished him. He draws his sword to kill himself thinking he had cause Juliet grief but Friar stops him and says, “Hast thou slain Tybalt? wilt thou slay thyself? And slay thy lady, too that lives in thee, By doing damnèd hate upon thyself” (III.iii.17-18). From Romeo 's viewpoint the Friar is unable to understand his grief and for the Friar, Romeo is being away to overdramatic. All of the evidence shows the difficult relationships between parents and children. Romeo and Juliet should still be taught since it’s relevant because there still are rebellious teenagers. Juliet thinking that she
High schools everywhere read Romeo and Juliet every year. It’s a part of our curriculum but should it be? The answer is no, it shouldn’t be. Teenages don’t want to read a story that was written over four hundred years ago and barely legible. Most kids like to read stories that they can relate to, not some unrealistic story about the fourteenth century. Also throughout the book there are sexual references that bring out the immaturity in people. The majority of people don’t find Romeo and Juliet interesting anymore, so why should we force them to read it?
It is argued among most that some older works of art may be outdated or irrelevant to todays culture. Since our society is ever-changing and shifting, it is said that these works do not apply to today. Some may believe that they are universally relevant and time will generally always be the same. Whatever the argument may be, no one can seem to come to a conclusion. Romeo and Juliet is a relevant work for a person in modern times due to how love overpowers hatred, family can become a hardship in which you battle, and being overly prideful can lead to rebellion.
These were just a few of the many reasons that schools shouldn’t be teaching Romeo and Juliet and if you ask any students i’m sure you would hear a few more. If schools took the time to look into other works of literature for students, they may find something that is better suited to our society than something written
In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Benvolio said, “Alas, that love, so gentle in his view,/ Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof!”(1.1.165-166) Benvolio suggests that love seems nice, peaceful, and innocent, but in reality it can be disastrous and even deadly. A world famous author and poet by the name of William Shakespeare wrote The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet in 1597. Romeo and Juliet is known as one of the best love stories in history. There are many significant characters in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet: Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, Tybalt, the Nurse to Juliet, Friar Lawrence, Mercutio, Lord Capulet, and Lady Capulet. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is the heart-wrending love story of two people who want to be together (Romeo and Juliet), but they cannot because their families are rivals. In the end, the two star-crossed lovers do not live happily ever after. Instead, they both perish. Why did their lives end so tragically? Ultimately, the prideful and foolish actions of the Capulets and Montagues, Friar Laurence, Romeo, and Juliet caused their untimely deaths.
Romeo and Juliet should be taught because it teaches about typical teenage behavior. Mercutio asks Romeo if he wants to dance and Romeo says “Not I, believe me: you have dancing shoes, with nimble soles; I have a soul of lead so stakes me to the ground I cannot move”(I.iv.14-16).
When Romeo and Juliet comes up in school curriculum any observer can see students eagerly signing up for roles, puzzling over Juliet’s eagerness to marry a stranger, or rehearsing their own unique interpretation of the play. In these moments students are released from the usual monotonous class period and allowed to enjoy a timeless piece of literature. While some may claim that Shakespeare is outdated or difficult to read, the positivities of including it in ninth grade curriculum far outweigh any struggles of comprehension.
I belive that schools should include Rome and Juliet in the nineth grade curriculum. I say that because Shakespear is very important to the world of literature and to not include him in the nithe grade curriculum would be a sin. I think that we should learn about Romeo and Juliet is because it is one of Shakespear's greatest plays ever and that's why I think that we should learn it instead of Hamlet or something else writen by Shakespear. Some people would say that Shakespear's to hard and that's why we shouldn't learn about it, but to that I say isn't that what high school is about, challenging your self. Another final reason why I say we should be read Romeo and Juliet is because there so many movies and refrences about Shakespear let alown
In Romeo and Juliet they speak proper english. Reading, listening, watching how they talk, students can listen and experience variety of aspects people now aren’t familiar with. In America we speak “pidgin english” so in this story we can learn a little something new. If this story was not taught in High school
Do you think Romeo and Juliet is culturally relevant? The 1599 play “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare, is culturally relevant to today. It is culturally relevant because a lot of the stories are like Romeo and Juliet, and because of the way they talk and act.
In this essay I will be arguing that shakespeare should be taught in High School. In my opinion, I think that William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the 9th grade curriculum should be taught because it relates to teenagers during this part of their life as they are going through love, jealously, and etc.. The three topics of which teenagers begin to experience during the beginning of their High School education. As William Shakespeare once said, “Nice and easy does it; those that run too fast will fall”. Just like 9th graders wanting to experience it all too fast without understanding what Shakespeare is trying to get across to the reader. In this paragraph I will show how shakespeare relates to teenagers feeling at this age. In my other paragraph I will be explaining how William became famous all over the world. My third paragraph with be an counter argument.
Romeo and Juliet, the love story that influenced many movies, tv shows, and stories based on the main idea of “star crossed lovers”. Honestly, Romeo and Juliet should definitely not be taught to 9th graders because it has nothing to do with teenagers’ lives now and days and cannot be connected in any way possible. It also isn’t even one of Shakespeare's better plays, Shakespeare has many other wonderful plays that should be read in place of Romeo and Juliet. 9th graders should be taught about more of Shakespeare’s work so that they can read an actually well written play that wouldn’t make the teenagers groan when they're told they have to read it, that also contains a good and interesting story line.
Final Project .There are many arguments for and against the inclusion of Romeo and Juliet in the 9th grade curriculum. It should not be studied because it is too advanced for students that are coming out of middle school. Students will not use this in the real world. Sometimes 9th graders are still unsure about what they want to do so if they want to become poets it is fine for them, but for the rest of the students it’s pointless and a waste of. time.
Written by William Shakespeare in the 1500’s, Romeo and Juliet is a beloved and well-known play. It is said by some to be the greatest love story of all time, while others say it is depressing and a waste of words. However, it has been taught in school for years! While some say it should be banned, there are many compelling reasons to continue teaching Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet should continue to be taught in high schools all around the country because it prepares students for future classes and is considered common knowledge, provides countless teaching opportunities, and teaches students how to understand and break apart complex plot lines as well as teaching human interaction
Students first read this play in 7th grade around the same age as Romeo and Juliet. There is no 7th grader on earth that would ever kill themself over a person they met the day nether less marry them. The whole plot of Romeo and Juliet is completely outdated from sword fights to arranged marriages. The schooling system of the US need to have kids read more modern plays like Alexander Hamilton or Fish in the Dark. Shakespeare is renowned for his use of words, but the main reasons he was so popular in his time was for what his language meant know days we don’t understand his insults or his philosophy behind each character because of the difference between our and his
There are those who associate Shakespeare with elevated social status and feel that Shakespeare is no longer relevant to a broad audience and therefore should not be taught. In addition in a world where composition is diminishing as technology becomes more prominent, they believe that Shakespeare is less important. These ideas are flawed as Shakespeare continues to be relevant intellectually, emotionally and most importantly culturally. Shakespeare should continue to be required reading.
