Shakespeare is a figure shrouded in mystery. In this paper, the title of “Shakespeare” will refer to the author of the works currently credited to William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare is undoubtedly one of the most famous writers of all time. He created masterpieces like Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and several more. For a long period of time, William Shakespeare from Stratford-upon-Avon was considered the author of all the works credited to Shakespeare. For over a century people have questioned whether or not William Shakespeare actually authored the works credited to him. In this ever popular debate, one candidate stands out as the most likely alternate author of Shakespeare’s numerous comedies, tragedies, sonnets, and historical plays. Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, is considered by many to be the true writer of Shakespeare; however, for reasons known only to him, decided not to take credit for the plays, and used the name William Shakespeare to mask his true identity. Because there is convincing evidence for both candidates and a lack of information for the time period Shakespeare lived in, it cannot be stated with absolute certainty that either of these two individuals is the true Shakespeare; however, of the two, the candidate most likely to be Shakespeare is Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford.
