Demetrius is the eldest of two children, of a now single father. He had a bright future ahead of him, but decided to give it up for the sake of his father. In order help his family, he started his own carpet cleaning business. He wouldn’t have been able to get it going without the help of his father’s boss, putting in a good word for him with the bank. Demetrius proves to be very mature and most people who interact with him think of him highly. He purposes his life around maintaining financial independence. He doesn’t want to have to depend on his family for money, but rather be the one to provide for them. Unlike his younger brother who is the irresponsible and tends to hang out with the wrong crowd. Demetrius’ family is support of all his decisions because they trust he will make the right ones. There is less of a familial control in his life. When the love between Demetrius and Mina initially blossomed and their relationship was just starting to get serious, their families react differently. Mina’s parents (mostly her mother) do not like the fact that he is not Indian and pushed her to pursue a relationship with another (Indian) man. A lot of it may have had to do with keeping face because he was not Indian. Their mindset was that the others of their community, who already think lowly of their family, will judge them even more. Demetrius’s family was a little wary of Mina being Indian and not Black (since his ex Alicia was), but don’t really pay it too much attention.
