A- The rhyming and stating that the scientists’ purpose was the root of their title adds a very humorous touch to the passage. Additionally, it emphasizes the condition of the colonel, and the humorous tone somewhat undermines the severity of his state. The inclusion of this humor adds a lighthearted mood to a novel involving World War II, a rare and interesting approach. I am interested to see if this persists throughout the novel.
“They couldn’t touch him because he was Tarzan, Mandrake, Flash Gordon. He was Bill Shakespeare. He was Cain, Ulysses, the Flying Dutchman; he was Lot in Sodom, Deirdre of the Sorrows, Sweeney in the nightingales among trees. He was miracle ingredient Z-247.

A- These many allusions all support Yossarian’s belief that he could not be touched. Allusions to Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Shakespeare are all implying figures that have lasting legacies in some shape or form. Thus, I imagine Yossarian must feel the same about himself. I am beginning to find Yossarian to be rather amusing to say the least.
