William the conqueror (figure 1) was born in 1028 Duchy of Normanby. William had died on the date 9th of September 1087. William had been aged 58-59, and died in Rove France. Williams’s death was not very significant because he died of old age on his way to a battle. Also at the same time William the conquerors death was significant because he had died still remaining as king of England, so lots of people would have attended the ceremony for him. This would be because William was the most significant person in England because of his high role in society. Williams’s burial had taken place at St Stephens Abby, Caen in Normanby. William would be also remembered today because in October 14, 1066 he had lead the Normans into defeating the English army in which he had become King on England. William the conquerors achievements and failures continued throughout his life from when he was born to his death. His achievements were, Becoming the first Norman king of England, Becoming duke of Normanby at 8 years old, winning a battle and defeating Harold ıı at the battle of Hastings. Williams’s biggest achievement would have been remaining king of England from 1066 till he had passed away in 1087. William had reined king of England for 38 years of his life. His coronation took place at the Westminster Abby on Christmas day the year 1066 after the battle of Hastings. His failures were probably that he could not speak English and was illiterate. Because he was illiterate he had introduced some words from where he was born into the English dictionary. William the conqueror is remembered today because of his long life achievements. The Battle of Hastings took place on Senlac Hill. Senlac Hill is located 7 miles or approximately 11 kilometres north-west of Hastings. This is where the battle got its name from. The battle took place on the 14th of October 1066. The battle of Hastings had been fought from 9 in the morning until dusk. The battle had lasted approximately lasted 9 to 10 hours. This was because William the conqueror was getting rid of the troops that are left fighting for King Harold himself. The battle of Hastings was fought by the Normans and the English. The army sizes were around 5000 to 7000 people on each side with each person armed with armour, swords, shields and many more weapons (figure 2). People know what happened at the battle of Hastings because it was recorded on the Bayeux Tapestry (figure 3) by his son William 2. The battle of Hastings was an important event because it was a battle on who would be king of England. William 1 and Harold 2 went to battle with each other because they both wanted to be king of England.
