“Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway.” When I hear that quote, there’s one person that stands out to me, William Wallace. You may know everything about him, some about him, or absolutely nothing. William Wallace was Scottish and lost his father at a very young age. Of course, he didn’t agree with the ‘government’ at this time, which he never does in his life span. His independence, strength, and courage will be seen in astonishing ways. As you can tell, his life was pretty difficult, losing his father so early in life and growing up without him. Later in his life, he grew strong and found the love of his life, Marion Braidfute. They married in secret because her parents did not approve of him. Shortly after the two were
One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). This example demonstrates that Odysseus enters a Cyclops cave and is not fearful. Odysseus enters the cave because he sees treasure and wants to get it for him and his crew. Odysseus chooses to enter the cave even though he knew the cave was the Cyclops home and this demonstrates courage, and this is why the trait should be encouraged. Another good example of courage that sticks out is Newton Knight, who chooses to help slaves even though he lives in the south during the Civil War. In the Biography.com Editors’s article, “Newton Knight,” Knight chooses to stop fighting for the Confederate Army and goes back to his hometown to help slaves, as the text states “They saw themselves as defending the residents of Jones County from the Confederacy” (Biography.com Editors 1). Therefore, this example demonstrates that Knight chooses to fight against the Confederate Army even though he lives in Mississippi. It takes a lot of courage to go up against the Confederate Army even though he lived in the south and almost everyone was against him. It should
Murray was talking to his Mother and she told him that he was ‘running away to this war. That’s not courage. Courage would be staying here.’ Most people would see the act of fighting in war courageous, because they’re going to defend their country, but in Murray’s case it wasn’t, because he was running away to war and leaving his family who needed him at home. This act is seen as either bravery to some and cowardice to others.
Clearly, as demonstrated by Arizona, one of the soldiers killed, an important element of courage is not to back away from challenges. Arizona did not hide when his troop was being attacked, but instead, he followed his captain in pursuit of the enemy, but unfortunately, he was shot. This concept of not backing down is further supported on pages 134 and 135, when O’Brien talks about one of his experiences with a bully as a young boy in middle school. O’Brien was pushed out of the line by a bully while he was waiting for the school bus, and though he was puny compared to the bully, he stood up for himself. The bully announced there was going to be a fight between him and O’Brien on Monday.
(Sadler and Moore). This quote shows how the men were willing and brave enough to do anything to protect their country. Both of these quotes show the traits of heroism, they knew there were many risks to what they were doing, but did it anyway because it was the right thing to do. Being scared is one of the most common feelings, it is something that even heroes feel. In the Jackie Robinson article we can see Jackie Robinson afraid to fail because, “He knew that all the
Courage is fear, holding on a minute longer. G. Patton •10. Buy the ticket, take the ride. Hunter Thompson •11. Don’t go around thinking the world owes you a living.
Courage is shown by doing something selfless. Andrew received a draft form the union army, and instead of going to fight the war like a man he chickened out.
There is several ways in which one can show courage but in the eyes of JFK for one to show a true act of courage they must be doing something they believe in despite the consequences one may be faced with let it be the disapproval by one's own family or the risk of losing your job in political office.
There can be no courage unless you’re scared. Have courage to act instead of react.” The person I am choosing to write about is a woman who had this type of courage. Harriet Tubman escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist.
The definition of courage as defined by Dictionary.com is the ability to do something that frightens one. A rebellion takes courage. It 's not something the average human being can do. One cannot simply expect just anyone to verbally stand up for what they believe is right. Courage is not something found in a common human being. Nathaniel Bacon wasn’t by any means a “great man” but he definitely wasn’t afraid to take charge of a situation that involved him, directly or indirectly, and stand up for himself. He was the type of relentless figure that made a difference in history because he had one thing we all strive to have: Courage.
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” (Lee 149).
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one or gives strength in the face of pain or grief. In the book Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, Douglas shows courage throughout his years of slavery. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery and had no knowledge of his age. “ By far the largest part of slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant”(Douglass 1). Slaves were often separated from their mothers at a very young age and Douglass was no different.
Being courageous means being deterred by danger
“Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you” (Hamilton 208).
