William Wells Brown was born a slave but died a free man. He wrote an autobiography about his life as a slave. He went into detail of how he and others were treated so cruelly. His master had owned forty slaves, they lived on a rather large plantation and their main production was of hemp and tobacco. This plantation was located some forty odd miles from St. Charles, Missouri. The master had no family but kept a female slave in the house with him to oversee the plantation. Every morning at four, a bell would sound, this was the signal to get up, eat and get to work. If any slave was late to the fields they would immediately receive ten lashes from the negro-whip. Brown was not a field slave so he had only heard and witnessed from a distance of this lashing. He …show more content…
Colburn's and hired to Elijah P. Lovejoy. Brown worked in a printing office under Mr. Lovejoy. Brown loved Mr. Lovejoy, saying he was the best slave owner he had ever had. The treatment was completely different for what Brown had ever witnessed or dealt with. He was put to work in an office and would often run errands for Mr. Love joy. Brown had a very good relationship withhis employer, something thousands of slaves would never experience. A situation occurred while working in Mr. Lovejoys office. While running an errand for his boss a group of white men had jumped Brown trying to kill him. Brown managed to make it out and run to Mr. Lovejoy and tell him of what just occurred. The ation got turned around, making Brown the guilty man. He was beaten so badly with a cane, he couldn't walk for five weeks and lost his job at the office. As simple as it seemed to work in an office as a slave it was a very dangerous job. To be caught by the wrong slaveholder, could end in near death. The treatment Brown had received just for doing a white mans job was cruel and very avoidable. In some plantation getting beat to death was quiet normal but in other it was very rare and looked down

To understand Henry “Box” Brown, it is important to understand the importance of slavery and its impact on them and their families. Helping young students understand oppression and discrimination of African Americans is particularly challenging, but without addressing this, the students’ worldview of other people cultures and values may be limited. If teachers disregard specific information in there lesson, the learning experience wouldn’t be as sensation-rich and memorable for the students. Thus, for example, engaging the students with bodily-kinesthetic, visual-spatial, and musical hooks throughout the year allows the learner to be “fully involved” in the learning process and outcome. At the same time, it helps the teachers to fully understand
To this day, many Americans tend to overlook the severity of the abuse and soul-breaking, institutionalized, terrors that slaves such as William Brown endured and fought against in the Old South. Physical and psychological torture was common, and to be expected from particularly harsh slave owners. Anyone who dared step out of line or refuse to work were met with even harsher consequences than before. This extremely low quality of life for slaves was not only common in the deep south, but also was spread up into the Missouri area, where slave and future abolitionist William Wells Brown would spend most of his life.
Adam Brown was a man who despite of wasting time in his life using drugs, being a bad person because he was not thinking about his family feelings when they were trying to help him to get over his addictions, he could achieve his American Dream and become a better person. The first American Dream Adam achieved was raising a family, Kelley and him were very happy together and she believed in him when he was still using drugs and making bad choices. “You have so much more to offer than this, Adam Brown” (Blehm 87). She told him so many times how much she loves him and believed in him and she was waiting for him when he would become a better person leaving the drugs life. “I will be here waiting for you when you are done” (Blehm 86).
When John Brown was a young boy growing up in Ohio, one of his earliest memories of slavery was a brutal beating of a slave boy. This gruesome event was one of the main reasons of why John Brown wanted to fight to end slavery. The fact that he witnessed it happen also had a bigger effect on his life than if he had only heard about it. As a grown man, Brown became known as a guerrilla fighter after the bloody Pottawatomie Massacre. Historian Edward Renehan states that, “Kansas is the birth of the Messianic Brown, it’s the birth of the Moses-like Brown, it’s the birth of the murderer Brown.”
(3) When first reading these narratives one would often assume, by what history tells us, that slave owners were cruel, hated men who often beat slaves severely if they committed even the slightest infraction. While this depiction does stand true for some slave owners, I was surprised to find that most of the former slaves interviewed in the “Slave Narratives” often held their masters in high regards, referring to them as kind and good. Former slave Harriett Gresham even goes as far to say that her master, Mr. Bellinger was “exceptionally kind”. Many slaves in the narratives described their masters as good to his slaves and never whipping them unless it was absolutely necessary. However, when the former slaves spoke of the “paterollers”, white men who roamed the roads in search of runaway slaves often beating them and returning them to their owners, they were described as being very cruel to slaves showing no sympathy to any slave found running away from a

Demons, ghosts, gods and anything that is a story, belief or tradition associated with a group of people is the basis of mythology. Maybe the people who had faith in it thought it as a real thing, but in contemporary society it is a dead tradition reduced to merely unbelieving tales that everyone takes as a work of entertainment. Well yes it is mythology, but not because it is fabricated. It is mythology because of the fact that it was a belief and a tradition among people. Not only was it myth then, but it is still a myth today due the fact that it is
