Understanding Style and Actions
In the book, entitled Style: Lessons in clarity and grace, Joseph Williams and Joseph Bizup discussed unclear writing and ways to resolve unclear writing. Williams & Bizup posited that the standard language rules for English commenced from geography and economics. While other rules, came about due to the need for efficiency. Regardless of the reason, the rules came into existence, there are several grammatical rules that affect writing the standard English language. Williams & Bizup attributed clear writing as the choice of the author and correctly, using grammar rules, aids in writing clearly.
As a choice, Williams & Bizup opined that the author can choose correctness as an act of “obedience” (p. 10) and that to write correctly, one needs “only a good memory” (p. 10). In writing, correctly Williams and Bizup identified three rules that affect grammatical correctness. However, Williams & Bizup opined, that one had the choice to selectively observe the rules. The first type of rules, discussed, by Williams & Bizup included “real rules” (p. 11). The second type of rules, mentioned, by Williams & Bizup included “social rules” (p. 12), where social rules distinguished standard and nonstandard language. Finally, the last set of rules mentioned,

16). Besides, these rules Williams and Bizup listed other word choices that represented “zealous abuse” (p. 18). While, other words needed special attention. Along with those rules, Williams & Bizup discussed the use of pronouns and their agreement with gender-neutral language. Williams & Bizup detailed four ways to write in a gender-neutral way, such as; replacing the pronoun, cutting out the pronoun, revising the “grammatical construction” (p. 24), and alternating between gender
“Authority and American Usage” written by David Foster Wallace, poses an argument about the English language, and the different beliefs of its usage. This essay was written in defense of Bryan A. Garner’s, A Dictionary of Modern American Usage. His argument in “Authority and American Usage” is the difference the between prescriptivism perception and the descriptivism perception (Linguistic terms that could easily be made into smaller, more understandable words for people like me). Since the beginning of time, language has evolved. From biblical times, to Shakespearean times, to present day; the English language has been continuously changing since it’s birth and has no intentions on stopping.
The event of Bacon’s Rebellion told by Schweikart showed that the success in colonization was the underlying cause of the rebellion. To start, in Jamestown, there were members elected for the legislative assembly that was divided into an upper house consisting of the governor and council with a lower house made up of burgesses. This participation in politics portrayed the theme of Politics and Power while Schweikart described the background of Bacon’s Rebellion with the white frontiersmen fearing the Indian’s attacks. Nathaniel Bacon Jr. became the governor of Virginia to be involved in the politics by leading the Virginian commoners to rebel for protection against the Indians. Moreover, the Virginians were angered by the fact that Berkeley

On the one hand, my mind was filled with the creative material of an intellectually curious young adult. Yet, on the other, I was afraid of the criticism my grammar skills would impose on me. What I had not realized, and did not until sadly late in my undergraduate study, was what the words grammar and conventions truly meant. Moreover, I kept waiting for the day I would walk into one of my classes and have an English professor de-liver an impromptu grammar test while also seriously evaluating my papers for grammatical errors. What I came to realize, however, was that I had an ability to present my ideas clearly. Reflecting upon this chapter, I know recognize that I was following one of Trimble’s pieces of advice: I was writing to imitate how I would speak to my intended audience. And this is the one thing I want to achieve with my students. I want them to have a clarity in their writing and for their authentic voice to shine
Error is something that is prominent in our daily lives. It is a natural occurrence from which we as humans tend to learn from. When the question of error in writing is provoked, things are not as simple given the fact that the, “Lack of clarity about errors contradicts what is perhaps the most common belief about error in writing, namely, that errors are simply “wrong”(Lu & Horner 189). Society today is quick to judge and state what is wrong and what is acceptable by the public. While some differences between Spelling Matters and Use Your Own Words are obvious, the similarities are relevant. Anne Trubek says that perhaps it is time to change or alter grammar rules to match the current generation and culture. We should advance our guidelines about what is proper and improper along with what is happening right now with the language. While Mikita Brottman says, “bad spelling can be a godsend—a way of weeding out those who are thoughtless and inattentive to detail” (p. 219).
A piece of writing is much more than just words on a page. Just as a potter carefully molds and carves every detail and shape into a piece of art, so does a writer. Each comma, dash, antecedent, and fragment is picked cautiously. Each grammatical choice brings to pass a different rhetorical effect creating an irreplaceable and unique piece of art filled with fine detail. Rhetorical grammar is the clay of a potter. One must have it to begin and it has a variety of options to choose from. A person’s ability to understand and use grammar is as the technique owned by the craftsmen. Just as clay can be brittle and weak, so can grammar if used incorrectly or not to its best ability. The most amazing work is not made simply by chance but because of
