21st Century Leadership of Willie Robertson Willie Robertson is the Chief Executive Officer of Duck Commander, which is a family owned and operated hunting-accessories company. Willie’s father founded the company in 1972, but it’s been Willie’s entrepreneur skills and charismatic leadership that has developed the company into a multi-million dollar business specializing in the manufacturing of duck calls, duck decoys, cooking DVDs and apparel. He also introduced his family and company to the world through the popular A&E reality TV show “Duck Dynasty” which has had a huge boost in the company’s exposure worldwide. Willie’s influence in the transformation and growth of Duck Commander is also attributed to his leadership style, philosophy, and personal values.
Throughout centuries, many of the qualities of a hero or a leader in the society have changed, yet there are still some qualities that have remained the same. In the story of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, leadership is the main theme of the play, as many different qualities of a

During my senior design project tenure at Texas A&M, I had the opportunity to work with a team of students that had strong personalities. I believe that I exhibited traits of mindfulness, respect and leadership during this period. Though my teammates were generally positive and kind-hearted, it was still surprising when certain individuals would take great pride in knowing a simple piece of information, all the while stepping over you to look good in front of a sponsor. Oftentimes a decent piece of advice on my end would be used by a teammate to uplift their own standing. True, it was a common occurrence of the practical world in life, but I realized that I did not have it in me to walk over others in order to obtain success. I learned to become more assertive, yet maintain my sense of integrity and give credit to others for their ideas and achievements. I believe a leader exhibits such qualities. While being aware of themselves, the leader is able to rise above and treat individuals with respect and not as a means to an end. Similarly, I believe it is important to respect people based on the content of what they say, rather than how smartly they say something.
I stood on the podium, looking out at the field and took a deep breath. The fans in the stands behind me were a buzz in my ears as I made eye contact with every member of the band. I held my hands up and clapped three times and then
Jean Luc Picard as a Leader If the cause is just and honorable they are prepared to give their lives--Jean Luc Picard The cares for lives, continuation of other's future, and the hope of a more successful generation are rarely the thoughts of anyone. Most individuals are self-centered, careless of others,
Being a good leader requires that you have empathy and sympathy for those around you. Empathy is the feeling that you understand what someone else is feeling in a certain situation. Sympathy is a feeling of pity for someone. It’s not a feeling that you understand what they are going through, you just feel sorry for them. Empathy means that you can relate to how the other person is feeling and understand. People are human and it’s important to understand how others are feeling rather than just feeling pity for them. Empathy would be something that is needed in every profession because you connect better with others when you understand and communicate that with
Approachable I believe a good leader is able to draw distinct clear lines when dealing with the people under her responsibility. I feel a good leader is approachable and yet still manages to maintain an authoritative stance. Often leaders tend to cross the line and become too friendly with the people they lead in a bid to gain popularity. However, from my work experience, when the leader tries to switch hats to being an authoritative figure it backfires. Which ultimately results in confusion amongst the group due to mixed signals and followers losing respect for the leader.
Julius Caesar once said, “It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.” This is relevant because in becoming a good leader, a person needs to sacrifice himself in the honor of others. What makes a good leader is having the ability to put other’s needs over your own. To be a good leader, a person must have the patience to deal with making stressful decisions. Being a strong leader means that person is honest and has integrity. Showing the characteristics of a strong leader include, taking risks while also keeping others safe.
The Servant (1998) examines this by suggesting that people have a need to be shown they are important. In order for a leader to build authority, they must respect others and acknowledge their value as part of the team. According to Robert Greenleaf (as cited in Ramer, 2008, p. 256), a servant leader must be a servant to others by meeting their needs first in order to become a servant leader. I believe respecting others, actively listening to others and acknowledging the importance of those individuals; which are all aspects of respect accomplish this.
While I do consider myself a leader based on the trait leadership theory I do not believe I am a perfect example. There are many traits I lack or could benefit from improving. One of those traits is tact and diplomacy. While I am outgoing and sociable I have at times rubbed people the wrong way. I also noted I have always made friends easily but there has also never been a shortage of people that simply do not like me. Sometimes people don’t want to hear what I think is right. Sometimes I don’t necessarily say things in the most delicate way. I recognize that I am a polarizing figure in this regard and this is something that I definitely would benefit from correcting.
I think to be a good leader not only has good personality but also the power of influence. In order to influence others, except being a role model, also having sympathy is one of the main characteristics. This is the point of leadership-winning the hearts.
In my opinion, even though it was assumed that some people are naturally born leaders, it was also argued that certain leadership traits can be developed through experiences. With reference to the leadership trait questionnaire that I have done previously, one of my stronger character trait that was reflected was
It’s not very hard to make someone excited and energy-filled for the rest of the day if you’re using your words in the “right way.” For instance, complimenting someone about their smile or their outstanding fashion sense can really encourage others in a positive way and make a chain reaction. This conveys that not only showing kindness can impact one person, but many others. Being a leader is a perfect fit for getting the ball rolling for a positive school, community, etc. Never back down to being friendly to others because it can make a positive imprint on you and your
