Before doing my research, I knew that a man named Wilson Bentley discovered the snowflake. He was born in 1865 in Jericho, Vermont (Smithsonian). As he grew up, he helped out by working on his family farm where the snow fall average was 10 feet per year (Smithsonian). Ever since he was a little kid, Wilson loved studying weather patterns and he used to keep a log of the ever-changing weather in his town (Smithsonian). When he got older, he used a microscope that he received for his birthday to look at each individual snowflake. Later on in his life, he started taking pictures of these snowflakes, discovering that each one is different (Smithsonian). I think that it would be cool to be able to find a way to document and take pictures of different
According to Dillard, a big snowstorm occurred in 1950. She describes that in the first week after the snowstorm, “nothing could move.” One night, two weeks after the snowstorm Dillard sees an Irish Catholic schoolgirl named Jo Ann Sheehy skating on the street at night. Dillard admires and remembers the sight for its, “beauty and strangeness.” Despite Dillard’s admiration for Jo Ann Sheehy’s graceful ice skating, her family does not like the Sheehy family, because Jo Ann’s brother Tommy told Dillard to go to her maid and call her a “ni**er.” Clueless of the meaning of the word, Dillard followed Tommy’s instructions. That night Dillard’s mother came into her room after the maid was asleep and explained the meaning of the word and, “made sure

Our society’s current rate of pollution coupled with naturally occurring environmental changes are reshaping the world we are accustomed to. In the documentary Chasing Ice, The Extreme Ice Survey is dedicated to bringing photography and science together in an effort to illustrate humanities role in nature, concentrating primarily on glaciers. Since film and photography have been proven to have a greater lasting impact compared to reading statistics this team of scientist and journalist have banned together to shed light on a concept that is considered abstract in much of the world, climate change.
Early in December of 1948 the village of Legends received one of the coldest winters in Legends History. Legends also set another record that December for the most people gone missing in one month (thirty two). With the thirty two people missing, Police and Dan the Snowman investigated the last time witnesses saw the missing thirty two people. Witnesses in nearby areas say they saw a tall creature with horns on its head and a lot of hair, more than usual. Jon, a witness, said the creature was ‘Krampus’ like. Before Dan the Snowman started to worry about his villagers, he knew ‘Krampus’ was back and ready for another battle.
One goal of President Trump is to build a wall near the southern border. According to the LA Times, President Trump insists that,“We will build a great wall along the southern border. And Mexico will pay for the wall. One hundred percent. They don't know it yet, but they're going to pay for it. And they're great people and great leaders but they're going to pay for the wall. On day one, we will begin working on intangible, physical, tall, power, beautiful southern border wall. We will use the best technology, including above and below ground sensors that's the tunnels. Remember that, above and below”(LA Times 7). President Trump is claiming that if a border wall is established, Americans will be benefitting from it, even though he is kicking out immigrants from the U.S. in order to create those opportunities.
Zoey was our new dog, she was a puppy golden retriever. She just got into her new home and she was asleep.
The research which the article "Dry Ice 'Snowboards' on Mars" attempts to explore is the discovery of large masses of frozen carbon dioxide, also known as dry ice on Mars. The most pressing aspect of this discovery is that it appears to be moving in a gliding fashion down some Martian sand dunes on pillows of gas which are evocative of miniature hovercraft, creating furrows as they move. Scientists have found that the hunks of dry ice have been gliding down the slopes of the sand dunes, creating what researchers have named "linear gullies." The research team which has engaged in this work were a group of planetary scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena. The technology used to engage in this research was done by capturing images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) while engaging in comparable experiments with sand dunes here on earth. The objects being studied were fundamentally hillside grooves on Mars (aka linear gullies).
"We were the only pulsating creatures in a dead world of ice." This is a quote from famous North Pole explorer Frederick Albert Cook. He, along with explorer Robert Edwin Peary, are well known as the founders of the North Pole. However, nobody knows who the actual founder is. The controversy on who was the first to make it there is an ongoing one, with both explorers claiming to have made it there first. Cook claimed that he had made it a year earlier than Peary, but the argument can go both ways. With evidence supporting both sides, the conflict can go on and on. While both have well detailed journals, some believe that the necessary information is absent, which makes finding a solution difficult. Although resolving a founder for an area should be an easy task, the founder of the North Pole is a mystery we may never fully resolve.
The one trillion snowflakes come pounding down, in a sea of white. Each snowflake is so small and delicate, that none of them stand out. But wait.
Snowflake: Are you sure we should be doing this? What if we get caught? We’d get in so much trouble!
On January 2010, my family gets off the plane at Logan airport Boston. Walking through the tunnel, I could feel the chilly cold weather, is was the first time ever that I got to experience it. In Anaheim, the weather is usually dry, humid, and hot, sometimes it could hit up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. So experiencing cold, chilly winter in Boston for the very first time is not very good experience for me. As I walk through the airport terminal, and get in my cousin car as he drove our family to our new apartment, I saw something that I never saw before in my life, a small white crystal flake rain down from the sky, it snow! As I think about it in my mind, I’ve never seen this kind of phenomenon In Anaheim as the only thing that we get are hot sunny sky. As my cousin car drive through the Tobin bridged, I saw it drop at a fast pace and in no time, it has begun to pile up like the leaf during autumn. When the car goes through downtown Dover, I was amazed by the architecture of the city, and the drastic differences between Dover and the city that I live in California. The small
Snowmaking is known as the production of snow by forcing water and pressurized air through a snow machine, such as a snow gun or a snow cannon, on a mountain. However big and complex a ski resort every component depends upon one basic element for its overall function and livelihood of operation. Snowmaking, it is most generally used at ski resorts to supplement the natural snow that has fallen. Using the process of snowmaking allows ski resorts to improve the reliability of their snow cover on the mountain and the ability to extend their ski seasons. Indoor ski slopes, which have just recently began to gain popularity, often use snowmaking all year round to suffice their snow needs. They can generally do so for a year round event because they
In Gary Snyder’s For Lew Welch in a Snowfall and For/From Lew, expression is important. It is the light that hues both pieces as real and relatable. Taking a delicate approach in his description of suicide and the after affect it had on him, makes the reader remember a time that may have been similar. As a result, empathy is aroused, thus, recreating an image that may be almost too real to be remembered. In this way, both pieces work together brilliantly and leave an impactful impression. However, as individual pieces, both poems hold strong messages that cannot be asserted if they were indefinitely coupled. Personally, For Lew Welch in the Snowfall is my favorite of the two. I have not had any experience with suicide, nevertheless, I found much truth through my own interpretation.
A growing sense of concern about violence in communities across America has prompted many people to step back and evaluate the causes of this violence. Although there seem to be many contributing factors, one that is repeatedly highlighted is the depiction of violence in the media. A substantial amount of research has been done on certain forms of media, especially television and video games, while other forms have been almost completely neglected. In this paper, I will attempt to extend the implications of this research to theater, which has a long history of simulating violence. This is an important connection to investigate, as theaters still draw an impressive number of patrons and play an important role in the economy. In order for theater companies to make informed decisions about what plays to put on, and for parents to make wise decisions about what shows their children should attend, it is necessary to understand the complex relationship between simulated violence and mental health.
The rise of Egyptian civilization occurred in the 3200 B.C.E. along with the Nile River when the first Pharaoh united the southern part of country “Upper Egypt” and the northern delta “Lower Egypt”. Egypt, the “Gift of Nile”, was an isolated land surrounded by the fertile banks of river Nile and deserts, located in the intersection of Africa and Asia (Bulliet et al., 2015). Egypt evolved alongside the Nile river for more than three thousand years. The Nile was a central component of life for those living in ancient Egypt. The river valley, geography, environment, and natural forces dictated the outcomes that influence the development of Egypt’s political system, religion, social stability, and agricultural prosperity. It even influenced the development of technologies such as hieroglyphics.
