With the call for an ecological conversion imminent, the need to adopt new techniques for power usage is more urgent than ever. As global warming as a result of Carbon Dioxide emissions becomes at the forefront of all environmental issues, the need for a global metanoia is encouraged. The Silicon is bonded in a crystalline lattice where electrons are shared in a disassociated manner. The greatest energy that can be produced by the sun is electricity. Photovoltaics, or solar cells, capture the sun and convert it into electricity. Solar cells were discovered by the Europeans back in the 1870’s when they used selenium to develop the telegraph. They found that when light hits selenium it would produce and electrical current. Soon enough there were many scientists and engineers working on photovoltaic systems. Silicon and Selenium proved to be the two best elements to conduct electricity when light hits them. Photovoltaic systems (PV cell) work by converting the suns light into electricity. A semi conducting material absorbs the sunlight, that energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, this allows the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. The further development of solar cells can be attributed to the satellite industry. Solar cells were expensive and there was no use for them until satellites came. Because it is impractical to tether satellites it became important to develop solar energy at any cost that would power these satellites. When the new Southeast Polk High School opened they added many new energy saving products. This included installing geothermal heating under the high school cutting back on the cost of heating such a large building. Many new windows help save on energy used to light the building along with automatic lights that turn off after several minutes without movement. The new high school shows how easy it is to save money and help the environment. Renewable energy is good for all aspects of the U.S, providing jobs, economical growth, environmental cleanliness, and new research for improving energy efficiency. Therefore the United States should use renewable energy to benefit the economy and environment.
Personally, I have never lived in Evanston until now, and when I was told it was going to be windy, I didn't believe them. Now that I am here, and get to experience the lake breeze almost every day, I understand why people say what they say. Energy is and always will be a hot topic of debate. Consumption, emissions, greenhouse gasses, cost, resources, ect. Utilizing these natural resources to turn to a more green form of energy by setting up wind turbines seems extremely commonsensible. Wind energy has the potential to lessen our dependance on the resources that we use everyday that will eventually be depleted.
