Quoted by the master American realism artist, Winslow Homer was skilled in the art of realism. He painted only what he observed from nature and his surroundings. Homer’s styles, mediums and subjects helped him create the artwork that he was so famous for. Probably his most famous painting, The Snap of the Whip is painted by Homer with incredible realism and accomplishment. As seen through his many landscapes, Winslow Homer enjoyed painting and studying the glorious nature that surrounded him all throughout his lifetime. s

In his finished artworks a subtle contrast of tone and color is evident (Strickland 85). At age 27 Homer began to use oil paints but then changed to watercolors at age 38. Being better suited to him, Homer created finished art works with watercolors which became his major medium (Strickland 85). In his stunningly real paintings Winslow Homer depicted many subjects such as groups of people, oceans, courting couples, Farm life, children playing (Hodge 127), forests, the lives of sailors, fishermen and hunters (encyclopedia.com). All of these things are evident and influence the artwork of Winslow Homer.

Maybe the most “beloved and popular” piece of art of Winslow Homer’s is The Snap of the Whip. In this 1872 painting the children are shown as innocent and a promise of America’s future. Even while portraying the “rural simplicity” of the country in this painting, Homer showed incredible realism in the landscape, trees and wildflowers. The nine boys in this painting a playing a common game of snap the whip, they would pull and yank on each other until they fell down.
