For example, Jazz music was a new thing and the clothing that people were wearing were all new customs. ¨Winter Dreams¨ was written during this time period. Further into the story we are able to see what the characters are all feeling. Dexter has many struggles in his life starting with the stories enemy, Judy Jones. Judy is not a pleasant character because of her actions and her ways in the story. Dexter creates his own problems and conflict in the story, that could’ve easily been prevented.

Curley’s wife, who remains unnamed in the book, has a dream of becoming Hollywood’s biggest star. Crooks, the black stable-hand only dreams of being able to have friends and be seen as an equal to others. Lennie and George are a pair of migrant workers who want to live the American dream and have their own ranch. Each of these characters’ dreams were all torn down by the world, illustrated by Steinbeck as a cruel place where dreams cannot come true, no matter how passionate a person may be.

What Dreams May Come is a movie about life, loss, death, afterlife and rebirth. The film explores the emotions evoked by a variety of characters when they are faced with coping with tragedy and death. It also delves into the manifestations of heaven and the variety of forms heaven takes in the minds of different people.

When he is a young boy he works as a caddy at country a club. While working there he meets Judy, a typical entitled rich girl, and ends up quitting his job, hoping to one day find a job that will be up to Judy’s standards. This short story explores the materialistic and superficial views people had at this time. Dexter believed the only way he could achieve ultimate happiness and get Judy was to be as rich as possible. Towards the beginning of the story it’s revealed how materialistic he is when the narrator reveals that his father has the second richest grocery in town and is the richest caddy (1) This shows how people at the time believed money and status to be the most important thing.

The short story “Winter Dreams” was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and was first seen by anyone in December of 1922 when it appeared in Metropolitan Magazine. The story also illustrates many of the same themes as “The Great Gatsby,” the greatest novel in American history. “Winter Dreams” is about a young man named “Dexter” who has desires, but thinks the only way he can have them is if he is rich. Requiem for a Dream details the lives of four individuals and how they each deal with their problems by attempting to escape reality. The four main characters depicted in the movie are Harry, Marion, Tyrone, and Sara. Harry is the main protagonist, and the film shows his progression into isolation as he sacrifices his relationships with his mother (Sara) and his girlfriend (Marion) due to his addiction and delusions. Each of the characters has their own individual struggles in their lives, but the film is interesting because they all attempt to escape into a world of their own delusions by using substances. The movie shows the audience a wide range of addiction and dependence through drug use, but it is not solely the use of drugs that fuels the character’s behavior. Use of legal and illicit substances is broadly shown within the film, and that is what stands out the most when viewing the film. However, the characters also have other ways of escaping their reality that sends them further down the path of destruction.
