Wise Blood follows the journey of an army veteran named Hazel Motes who was raised by very strict Christian parents. While serving in the military, his friends tell him he has no soul and that God is not real. Hazel says of his faith, “All he wanted was to believe them and get rid of it once and for all, and he saw opportunity here to get rid of it without corruption, to be converted to nothing instead of to evil” (Wise Blood 15). When he returns home, he decides he will start his own church called The Church Without Christ. Once he arrives in the town of Taulkinham to begin promoting his church, he meets Enoch Emery, a lonely unstable young man who desperately wants to be Motes follower and friend. Hawks then flees again because his secret is out, leaving his daughter Sabbath with Motes. Motes continues to preach unsuccessfully while Enoch decides their church needs a human prophet from their world. His blood then tells him to go to a museum and steal a mummy to be the church’s worldly prophet. Sabbath likes the idea and proceeds to cradle the mummy in her arms like a baby while Motes is disgusted and throws it away. Onnie Holly shows up shortly after, and wants to help Motes but he wants to charge people to be in the church which Hazel doesn’t like. He then steals all of Hazel’s ideas and starts his own church called The Holy Church of Christ Without Christ. He even gets a fake prophet who looks like Hazel to dress up and pretend to be him. Motes in enraged by this, seeing it as an act of mockery. He follows home the fake prophet and runs him off the road. Motes violently runs him over with his car to exact his revenge. He is pulled over by the police later because he is driving without a license but they have no idea about the murder he just committed. They take him back to his home where he blinds himself with lime in order to try and be forgiven. His house keeper continues to take care of him after he blinds himself, but she discovers that he has been inflicting harm upon himself by wrapping his chest in barbed wire and filling his shoes with glass in order to be forgiven.
