Characterisation is a vivid description of a person's appearance and character. This is presented through their actions, speech or thought. The novel 'A New Kind of Dreaming' by Anthony Eaton uses characterisation to portray the issue of abuse of authority and power through the antagonist Sergeant Butcher. Sergeant Butcher is a powerful high ranked policeman in the isolated town Port Barren. The author urges us to question whether we would report the crimes with the repercussions that would follow, or to keep quiet.
Character is a personality pattern. A vast amount of qualities and trends tend to occur together in a pattern and even the lack of character is a personality pattern. Certain traits and tendencies tend to occur together and form patterns reinforcing each other. Also certain traits and tendencies seem to wholly have a common cause. There is some kind of simple component in the person 's being that is
Now, in “The things they carried” The setting is a key aspect of the plot too. This is story by American novelist Tim O'Brien, about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. It is based upon his experiences as a soldier. This short story takes place in the trenches of the Vietnam war. The items carried by the soldiers show us they were in battle and fight, they had missions to carry out. “Military payment certificates, C rations, and two or three canteens of water.” ( Tim O’ Brien)

The text defines characterization as, “the author’s presentation and development of the traits of the characters.” (WEAL, 60) It is important to understand that characters are the heart of a book and good characterization is essential in order to make them real to the reader. Imagine for a moment, reading a book and having a hard time to connect with any of the characters, this factor could make the reader lose interest in the story. In order to keep the reader’s hooked, it is vital for the author to not only create but also develop the character so that it is easily relatable to the audience. The character Maude from the book “Harold & Maude” by the author Colin Higgins definitely satisfies this criteria. Higgins molded the character Maude from the personality of three different women he encountered in his real life and made sure to develop Maude’s personality throughout the book. The character Maude is what the text would define as a “round and dynamic” (WEAL, 61) as this character keeps getting fascinating and intriguing as the story evolves. This is what sets Maude apart; she is multifaceted from her badass ways to being a role model, all of these factors help make her real to the readers and hence, is such a lovable character.
A symbol is a person, place, or thing in a narrative that suggests meanings beyond its literal meaning. It is also related to allegory, but it works more complexly. A symbol usually contains multiple meanings and associations. In the story "The Chrysanthemums," the author John Steinbeck portrays the meaning of chrysanthemums in a realistic and symbolic way. Chrysanthemums are simply flowers but a strong central symbol in a way that, chrysanthemums shows some other characteristic such connecting with a stranger, her childlessness, and social.
Characterization: often used by authors to make readers feel that even fantasy characters -- a bumbling teddy bear -- can live and breathe. Initially, Saki uses direct characterization to state directly what a character is like.
Characterization refers to the techniques the author uses to get us to understand certain characters’ personalities. How does the author present Mollie, Snowball and Napoleon (look at both direct and indirect methods of characterization)? The author, Edgar Allan Poe used many different forms of characterization in the book Forgotten Tales. The characterization that he uses helps develop of theme because it can give more description to the main or side characters in a story. Characterization can help us almost step into the book giving us a clearer image of what the possible theme or themes can be. The short stories I will be using today are “The Sphinx's” and “The Oval Portrait”. These stories can be described as disturbing and mysterious, giving the intended audience a intriguing feeling.
In addition, authors use direct characterization to bring characters to life. Direct characterization directly states a character’s personality.
