Islamophobia in the West Most witch hunts were by government authorities in response to chaos and death (Hunter,2015). During the Salem witch trials in "The Crucible" and "The Heretic's Daughter" the government persecuted and killed many innocent people because they felt as though those people had supernatural powers. As a result many people were seen as evil witches and blamed for societies evils regardless of guilt or innocence (Beaudoin, 2011). “According to Arthur Colman…in order to survive and remain whole” (Hunter,2015). Society uses fear of those that are different to choose scapegoats. This is not done in search of justice but because they need someone else to blame. This unjustified hatred of Muslims first became evident in the 11th century during the Crusades when Christians went to reclaim the holy land of Jerusalem, present day Israel. During the Crusades thousands of innocent Muslims were killed, according to records close to 70 thousand Muslims and Jews had been slain just in Jerusalem (Gul, 2011). During the 13th century Christian kings applied heavy taxation on Muslim residents to suppress Muslims and force Christianity onto them (Gul, 2011). After the collapse of Granada state the oppression of Muslims heightened, they were deported into N.Africa and forced to be Christian, in an attempt to obliterate all traces of Islam (Gul, 2011). In the 1500s many European powers passed legislations to limit what Muslims could do in their everyday lives (Ali, 2010). Even after over 10 centuries since the first evident movements of anti-Islamist, this perpetual issue has spread worldwide and has only gotten worse with …show more content…
Although Islamophobia stems from religious differences and oppression today's it is present because way too many people have the perception that Muslims and anyone from the Middle East is a terrorist and has an evil agenda. "Although every Muslim is not a terrorist, every terrorist is a Muslim" (Gul,2011). This view of Islamic and Middle Eastern people is present for many reasons. One being how they are being portrayed in the media. Whenever something ISIS related is reported the views of non radical Islamic people are rarely shown and if it is it's a two or three minute segment (Obeidallah, 2014). Of all violent crimes committed in the US each year the crimes of Muslims are bring to public attention more than others yet they only account for 160 of thousands (cite). In most Hollywood movies you will find nothing but Muslims being portrayed as the assailant. Another cause for Islamophobia in our society is how the government portrays people in predominantly Islamic communities. The US is constantly in need of oil and many other natural resources that are in abundance in the Middle East. With someone these countries refusing to share for the proposed prices the US has waged war against them to gain control over these
McCarthyism witch hunt that can relate to another, is the holocaust. Both the holocaust and the witch hunt trials, punished and aligned the people they believed were different and embodied the devil. In both the witch trials and the holocaust, the hatred towards the certain groups of people was not a new thing. Jew hatred was a worldwide thing, and witches were a hysteria starting in England. Jew hatred has been apart of the world's society for years, because of their religious beliefs. The jews were not the normal christians, that most people in the world were. Therefor, hitler took ideas to take the jews and take their own lives, because they were different. McCarthyism soon took on a broader meaning, describing the excesses of similar
Witch hunts still today are world wide. The witch hunts today may not be like the ones seen in McCarthyism and in the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller. One modern day witch hunt would be how society battles against fat. Some people are said to be not good enough, ugly, or a bad person if they are not stick thin. Seeing and hearing about modern day witch hunts gives the readers of The Crucible and reachers of McCarthyism a better in sight of the situations. McCarthyism and The Crucible are similar to the concept of the witch hunts, but the consequences are rather different.
September 11th holds many hard and upset feelings around the world today. The harsh actions of Muslim extremists unfortunately completely changed the way Muslims are treated, especially in the United States. These events, exacerbated islamophobia. Unfortunately, “the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, connect Muslims and Islam to terrorism within the geographical borders of the United States.” (Byng) Although it has been over a decade since the attack, many still feel racist and discriminatory attitudes towards Muslims. Muslims are the targeted minority in the United States, “the 9/11 terrorist attacks shifted the social and political context for Muslims in the United States. Terrorism within the geographical borders of the United States carried out by Muslims places an identity at the center of national and global politics.” (Byng) The blame of the horrible terrorist attacks, rather than be placed on terrorists or religious extremist, has been placed on Islam in America. After September 11th, hate crimes towards Muslims skyrocketed, “the most dramatic change noted by the report was a more than 1,600 percent increase in reported hate crimes against Muslims -- a jump from 28 hate incidents in 2000 to 481 last year.”
Due to the current political state of this country, the fear of Islam has been magnified especially, when the president of the United State has an anti-Islamic campaign. Islamophobia is the fear of Muslim identified individuals, this is a topic most people avoid because it is both religion and a political issue. In my time with Housing & Residential Education, I have seen many hot topics and Islamophobia is not one of those topics. The fear of Islam will be around and will not go away until we shed the light on it or bring more awareness. I am tired of feeling like a terrorist because of my identity or getting stopped at the airport because I am young, educated, and a Muslim man. My female Muslim sisters and friends have it worse than I do
One reason why people have Islamophobia is because of all the negativity in our society. After September 11th, people did not see Muslims the same. Also, in movies Muslims are always the ones bombing something as a joke. People should think about how they feel about being stereotyped. Things like that should not be on television or in newspapers. Someone like Donald Trump, who have Islamophobia, should have some type of punishment for even making the ignorant statement. Some Muslims do not get the job that they want because of the discrimination today. This should be taught at school so, students are aware of their environment. They should be able to teach them the correct literature of Islam and not the false statements. By doing this may be all the false stereotypes could be removed from their head, because this can physically and emotionally damaged someone. Students can also help eliminate against Islamophobia. Education does help understand more about Islamophobia. Therefore, In America Muslims are not accepted and they do not fit
Most of the Christians then were persecuted because of their faith. However, an advancement over the years led to the persecution of Christians by the Muslims. Muslim persecution began long ago and is widespread. Some of the Muslims often defect to Christianity, a violation which is punishable by death according to Islamic laws. According to Islamic laws, Christians are not allowed to have any authority over the Muslims or to build new churches or even repair the old ones. In general, the Christians who live in the regions dominated by the Muslims are often subjected to various rules and regulations which if not followed often comes with a great price and
Muslims are persecuted because of their religion and ethnicity. We as Americans shouldn't be so judgemental as we have the ku klux klan in America who in Islamic states are like ISIS to Muslims. Although we have faults as individuals it does not determine who we are as people. America is said to be the greatest country of them all but even then our country falls to to the darkest of times. To hear and see that one person from a different country commits a crime does not reflect on all people in general from that country. Muslims are said to be the nightmare of America but even they had no idea who would have had the odasity to plan such an attack on September 11, 2001. “My shock quickly turned to outrage. Who Would do this?”(Dalia).
This paper discusses the threat that Islam poses to America and the western world. Islam is a very large religion that has increasingly widespread influence on the world. Countries that are ruled by theocracies of Islam are some of the weakest and violent countries on Earth. Countries who are enveloped by Islam tend to have the highest percentage of extremists as well. This paper also discusses the history of Islam, its founding, what it it teaches, and how the religion has affected the world since its origin. The paper goes on to show incompatibilities that Islam has with the western world, whether that may be democracy or individual rights. Further, the dangers of Islamic immigration to
To begin, the topic I have chosen that drives my attention is the ongoing crisis of Islamophobia in America. Islamophobia basically the fear of Islam or Muslims (Whitman, 2015). Islamophobia has a considerable relationship to social inequality and this is because social inequality is prevalent in America. The roles of media have helped the ability social inequality rise to the roofs. Social inequality has shifted roots from African-American unjustness in the past to the concept of Islamophobia. For example, in the past African-American faced social inequality and lacked privilege. African- American did not have the same rights as other individuals in America (Raiklin,1990). For example, African-American had to drink from a different water fountain
Islamophobia; fear in Muslims. After the main attack on 9/11, Islamophobia struck in the hearts of most Americans. My parents growing up had dreamt about moving to America for they wanted all the opportunities they heard America could provide for them. It was a dream of theirs. Of course after 9/11 however, those opportunities went from hard to reach to not obtainable at all. Americans started to hate Muslims and discriminated them completely. No matter the prejudice, my parents stayed true to themselves and faithful to their religion. I, however, had a problem. Growing up in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood, sticking to your beliefs get harder and harder as years go by.
After September eleventh, news coverage was main cause a rise in Islamophobia feelings. With terrorist attacks from Middle-Eastern based groups, like ISIS and al-Qaeda, a sense of fear has grown among the American people. A major cause in this rise is the media’s influence on people opinions. The media can get people to feel almost anything they want through pictures, videos, etc. News sources focus on Middle Eastern conflicts, putting Muslim’s in an unfavorable light, and news outlets show pictures of terrorist groups, such as ISIS, to represent the Muslim population. Acts of discrimination, racial profiling, and racism against Muslims, also classified as Islamophobia, has seen a major increase because of news coverage.
Islamophobia is the fear of Muslims, or the religion of Islam, according to BBC (2017). Some people blame all Muslims for terrorist attacks, that are caused by terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda, Isis, and Boko Haram. These organizations allegedly follow Islam, I say they allegedly follow Islam, because if they had indeed studied Islam, they would understand that Islam is a religion of peace, not terrorism. The word “Islam” means submission to God’s will and obedience to God’s law. It derives from an old Arabic word meaning “peace”. (What is Islamophobia? – CBBC News Round. (2017, June 19).
Although the fear of the unknown and that which we do not understand has always been around, Islamophobia saw a sharp rise in 2001, following the 9/11 attacks in which members of the radical Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airline planes that were used to crash into the Pentagon and the twin towers of the World Trade Center, killing nearly 3000 people and injuring many more. The collapse of the World Trade Center sent us into an economic disaster that we are still recovering from today. While the vicious attack affected every
According to Dictionary.com the definition of Islamophobia is a noun used to describe the “hatred or fear of Muslims or of their politics or culture”. When the terrorist group of Al-Qaeda attacked the United States on September 11, 2001 there was a spike of hate crimes towards Muslim Americans in this country. Tragically enough, according to the Washington Post, Anti-Muslim hate crimes are five times more common today than they were before the attacks in 2001. Islamic extremists are great reason to blame. Many argue that these terrorist groups do not promote the religion itself and have tainted the beauty of the religion with vicious and horrendous crimes against innocent people. ISIS today is a great example. The crude group is known to kill many people both Muslim and non-Muslim. Still, Muslim-Americans are affected by their actions here at home. The Washington Post created a graph to visually demonstrate the rise of crime towards Muslims after the terror attacks in 2001.
Islamophobia existed in America before the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001, but it was not as harsh as it was back then, but it did increase after the terror attacks and with the media adding more misconceptions (Sinlak, n.d.). Some of the perceptions that most Americans had of the Middle East was that they were rich with oil, lived a lavish life and consisted of deserts. They did not have the idea of the Middle East being a terrorist region where there was always war. However, after 9/11 the negative views started to increase, and Muslims and the Middle East were viewed very negatively. When we
