As evidenced from multiple books, power is something that is easy to abuse. When an individual is given the ability to control the masses, it can be used incorrectly. Power can lead to abusiveness, irresponsibility, and overconfidence.
Do you feel that your leaders ever fail to use their authority in the way you believe they should? James Madison believes that government is power, and since humans are in charge of the right, it always has the ability of being misused. Communities revert to chaos when the authority figures abuse the influence they have. Madison’s argument is correct because people in general need strong rulers, so if the privilege given to the superiors is exploited, society begins to break down.
Power is not inherently a bad tool, but it is when it is placed into the wrong hands. When or if it is placed in the wrong hands, it can corrupt the holder. Even if they do not have bad intentions, the power may corrupt them into using it for bad intentions. The quote stated by Machiavelli, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” is true because too much power can corrupt an individual’s thoughts and this can be proved through the book One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest written by Ken Kesey, and also the “Stanford Prison Experiment” which was conducted by Philip Zimbardo.
Power and corruption are concepts that are difficult to fully understand. Several controversies occur within these topics. There are both conventional and unconventional ways of viewing power. In an attempt to make a claim contrary to common belief, David Brin stated, “It is said that power corrupts, but actually it’s more true that power attracts the corruptible.” This statement is not accurate because power is the corrupting device responsible for a plethora of downfalls leaders have experienced.
Power will corrupt all who seek it. They will do bad things to gain it and will do even worse things to keep it from others.
People who have power can have negative effects on others because they can be intolerant and dangerous. Power may seem like a good thing, but I can promise you it’s not.
Power, a tool, a quality, an influence over others, in other words, a sense of control. In relation to this, those that are given or even earned a great amount of power should use it moderately. In the world we live in today, many “leaders” use their power negatively, resulting in unfairness to others.
A perfect example of how power has a negative effect on others would be King Creon in Anitigone. In Anitogue she tries to bury her own brother Polynices. But King Creon stated that anyone who tries to bury him will be killed. This shows that the king has absolute power over the people and is willing to kill Antigone over her trying to bury her own brother. This also shows that the peasants have no power and have if they don't follow the rules they will be punished. These examples prove that power has a negative effect on others because whoever is in charge has absolute power over the people.
When one is given excessive power it will bring a realm of destruction for everyone around them. While reading Antigone one can conclude. People with power have negative effects on others because they let the power go to their heads.
Power can allow the person in charge to evoke fear to get people to do what they want. Here is an example from the play, Antigone, When King Creon uses fear to get his people to do what he wants. Another example is from the game, Infamous: Second Son, the head of the D.U.P., Augustine uses fear to get people of Seattle to turn in Conduits(people with abnormal abilities (powers) that normal people feared). Power in the wrong hands allows leaders to do whatever they want with no one stopping them. Power in the wrong hands has death in it. Power in the wrong hands also has violence written
Men in power have a choice to use their power wisely or to abuse it, but the choice is up to them. Men with power can change alot of people lives and change their fate, what they do with thier power can drive them mad or they can change lives for the good. Power givin to the wrong people cna have drastic outcomes.
Possessing a certain amount of power is not a bad thing. It is the love for power and the desire for more that ends up eventually destroying one’s mind and body. The desire for power corrupts one’s mind and will cause them to make decisions that will result in the destruction of theirs and other’s futures.
Power is the ability to direct not affect. In other words don't abuse something because of personal feelings and emotions. Power has a negative effect on society because who ever has power over uses it.
The way a society is run and how things are enforced also can cause negative feelings towards power. It can cause many to rebel if they feel that a leader has too much control, and it can also make people covet and desire such strength leaders have. In Julius Caesar, Cassius
Today, we see a lot of people in power. Some of those people know how to use their power. Others do not. Power in cases throughout history or in literature is good while other times that power is abused and turns out to be dangerous which leads to bad. However, today, we are seeing power in the “bad light”. With power being taken to another level for the worse or power that causes all out chaos, power shows the bad in people.
