Wizard Of Oz Color Analysis

Could you ever imagine if The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum didn’t have a yellow brick road or an Emerald City? The colors chosen are significant and give the story a deeper meaning. Three colors that stand out in the beginning, middle and the end of the novel are gray, yellow and green. In the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum’s use of color is symbolic by associating distinct colors with specific settings and characters.

The purpose of our project in the form of a drawing is to represent the life of Janie Mae Crawford. The image of the world shaped like a heart has both a light side and a dark side. In general, the world is in the shape of a heart to show how Janie views her world: completely involved in the concept of love. Janie, constantly encompassed within goals of finding and understanding love, views the world as a giant melting pot of love, and all she has to do is travel the planet to find it. Filmmakers, actors, and film lovers across different spectrums were being exposed to how Technicolor made certain scenes in films come alive. The use of vivid color added artistic value to cinema. Color also represented many different vivid ideas and thoughts. And color was an important aspect in The Wizard of Oz. imagine if the yellow brick road was a plain gray or if the Emerald City never sparkle with mystifying colors of green. In “The Wizard of OZ” these aspects of Mise-en-Scene all come together to make up a spectacular viewing experience. Created in 1939 and directed by Victor Fleming, “The Wizard of Oz” was one of the first successful Technicolor films. Since this film was shot primarily in color, it gave the directors and costume designers many new opportunities to use color in ways that they hadn’t been able to before. The main point I will be demonstrating is how the filmmakers effectively used color and costuming to convey certain feelings and messages throughout the film.

Firstly, the symbolism of colour plays a major role in expressing various emotions throughout the story. In the beginning, Dorothy sees “nothing but the great grey prairie on every side” (Baum 3); surround by grey Dorothy feels drained and unhappy. What do colors say about a person? Well according to personality innovator Don Lowry, there are four colors to represent the types of people in the world. green’s are thinkers, gold’s are planners, orange’s are impulsive, and blue’s are compassionate. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the character of Jay Gatsby is best represented by the color blue. Gatsby’s personality best fits this color because blue’s are willing to work hard for what they believe in and are very caring for others.

For example, Betelgeuse is represented in or around the color black. He wears a black and white striped suit. He seems to love to scare people out of their pants, which causes others to possess fear. The other major color that surrounds the film which I think is the most important is the color red. The color red represents love and sacrifice.

Protesting in the National Football League has been going on, as some of the country’s most beloved and highly recognized athletes are seen disrespecting the United States of America on national TV every weekend. The players’ reason for the protesting is police brutality, you can see them kneeling, raising their fist in the air, or even sit in the locker room while the national anthem is being played. Although I do understand what they are trying to do, I believe that there definitely better ways to go about their protest. The protests started in 2016 when Colin Kaepernick, quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, took a knee during the national anthem. When question about his actions he responded by saying, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour”(Lake). While some people sided with Kaepernick most people took offense to his decision to kneel. In him doing this it has caused a league wide outbreak in protest; as players and sometimes even whole teams take a knee or show some type of protest during our country's anthem.

Oz is shot in bright and vibrant colours, which pertains to the idea of a magical land that appears very opposed to the dull and colourless real world of Kansas, assisting on taking the viewer on the journey ‘over the rainbow’. This goal oriented plot in The Wizard of Oz follows a pattern of development that encourages the viewer to expect Dorothy to reach her desired goal. The viewer then sees each action of Dorothy’s to be a progress of this desire to go home to Kansas.

Colour schemes are used to unify artworks and it consists of three common schemes: warm, cool, and neutral. The warm colour scheme is vivid and energetic and tends to advance in space. It consists of red, orange and yellow. Cool colours give an impression of calm, and create a soothing impression. Blue, green and violet are a part of this colour scheme. Neutral colours give a feeling of calm and quiet atmospheres and it consist of grays, blacks and whites. The monochromatic colour scheme is based on several values of one hue. Colours are more important than they are give credit for. A viewers eye quickly catches a bright colour against monotonous background than a blended in color. Its almost human psychology, you notice a man in a bright yellow shirt in a crowded street than a white or grey shirt that blends into the crowd. Use this to your advantage and follow the contrasting colours for best effect. The good thing about colours is that they deeply affect the mood of people. Yellow is believed to elevate people and make them merrier whereas red is believed to be exciting. Talk about manipulating people!
