Cherishing Men From Afar: Qing Guest Ritual and the Macartney Embassy of 1793 Along with the travel of Marco Polo to China, and the first missionary to China to preach the Christianity, these communications continuously have changed the West’s view on China or have made westerner concern about China. For examples, the travel of Marco Polo increases the westerners’ interests in China, but the closed–door policy during Qing dynasty makes westerners criticize the stagnation of China. As well as some events that might not be able to bring out reaction or discussion timely, but along with the development of world history, people will look back at the historical events, to rethink these historical events and try to find out that there is any relation or significant that can explain other events. The arrival of Macartney embassy at the court of the Qinglong emperor in 1793 has been considered as this sort of event. This event was considered as an incidental event but was not considered as an important event during that period, at least for the Qing Empire. But it attracts the Western scholar’s attention afterward, and generates different kinds of annotations and theories about it. Even though those westerner scholars have different opinions or theories about the Macartney embassy,but consistently they all consider the Qing imperial behavior in managing the audience of Macartney embassy to be stagnated and backward.
