In the sixth century B.C. the Roman Empire ruled many cities but the most famous one was Pompeii. Pompeii was a city that was built on a plateau that Mt. Vesuvius had formed from its lava flow. Pompeii was also a well-known city before and after the eruption, of Mt. Vesuvius, where it left the whole city covered in its ashes. The person who discovered Pompeii and started its excavations was R.J. de Alcubierre, C. Weber, and F. la Vega but later on in the next centuries the excavation was led by other archeologists. One of the oldest beverages known to man is wine, an alcoholic drink made from fermented grapes. Wine has been enjoyed all around the world and Ancient Rome is no exception. Ancient Rome played an important role in its history. Wine carried religious, philosophical, and social implications for the Romans as it was a part of their daily life. The popularity of wine and drunkenness in Ancient Rome is clearly portrayed throughout poetry, art, literature and even laws. Although wine was eventually available to all, it’s implications for women were severe. An important connection between Ancient Rome and wine that is rarely discussed is the idea of denying women a right to drink. Today, it is not uncommon or distasteful for women to have a glass of wine but in Roman society, women’s overindulgence of wine was frowned upon. This paper will discuss women in Ancient Roman society and analyze sources from Valerius Maximus and Propertius to focus on how the role of wine reinforced the patriarchal system and oppression of women.
One of the most striking differences between ancient Athenian women and ancient Egyptian women was the ability to hold positions of power. Egyptian women were monarchs and held other positions depending on their social status. (Capel 1996, 176) Women were allowed to participate in low ranking government jobs, especially during war when the men are off fighting and leaving behind their positions. However, these positions were not kept for long because the men upon return automatically earned their position back by being the superior sex (Watterson 1991,).
The title of Sarah B. Pomeroy's book on women in antiquity is a summary of the main categories of females in the literary imagination and the societies of ancient Greece and Rome, over a period of fifteen hundred years. Beginning with goddesses, Pomery retells some Greek myths, outlining the social functions of female Olympians – the goddesses are archetypical images of human females, as envisioned by males. Desirable characteristics among a number of females rather than their concentration in one being are appropriate to a patriarchal society. Demosthenes states in the fourth century B.C. this ideal among mortal men, "We have mistresses for our enjoyment, concubines to serve our person and wives for the bearing of legitimate children (Pomery 1995)." Pomery’s goal in writing this book was to detail and outline the true significance of women in all other their roles in antiquity.
In the book, “The Complete Persepolis” written by Marjane Satrapi every woman had a prescribed role. The role of Marji’s maid was to show that social class differences do exist and to show what happens within these social class differences. Marji’s mother’s role was to support Marji and make sure that she was well off, while her grandmother’s role was also to support her and give her words of wisdom. Her school teachers’ role was to make sure that the female children, attending the school, wore their veils, while the guardians of the revolution’s role were to arrest females that were improperly veiled. The younger Marji’s role was to show us how the Iranian Revolution/ the mandatory wearing of the veil affected
Even though not all women wear the head scarf and cover their hair, they still have to cover there body. They can’t wear shorts, skirts, tank tops, or anything that exposes there body. All muslim women including Iranian women can’t have boyfriends or any sort of contact with other men. Sexual activity before marriage is considered a really bad sin and is looked bad upon in society.
Throughout history women have faced many struggles in gaining equality with men. Freedoms and boundaries have been dependent upon the time period, rulers, religions and civilization. Ancient Greek women and Ancient Egyptian women were both equal to men as far as the law was concerned in certain areas; however, their equalities were different in the sense that Greek women were married out of necessity and viewed as property while Egyptian women were respected and loved by their husbands. Ancient Greek women and Ancient Egyptian women also both lived with limitations such as being thought of as domestic servants, yet these views solely depended on the time and polis.
In Persepolis, the Islamic state makes the wearing of veils compulsory, under the assertion that it is a symbol of both Iranian culture and Islamic religious law. While Marjane accepts the veil as part of her life, she rebels against the ideology it represents. When Iran begins to enforce stricter dress codes to ensure modesty, Marjane sees that the veil is a form of controlling the female population, a form of suppression. She rejects the double standard that allows Iranian men more freedom: “You don’t hesitate to comment on us, but our brothers present here have all shapes and sizes of haircuts and clothes. Sometimes, they wear clothes so tight that we can see everything” (299).
Iran during the Iranian Revolution and the Iran—Iraq war was shrouded in darkness; it represents a time of major oppression by the Islamic-based government and a huge shift in culture for the Iranian people. The coming-of-age film, Persepolis, reveals the plight of a young girl trying to find herself whilst simultaneously living in fear and being prosecuted for her seemingly normal (at least to western culture) behavior. The major geographic theme of gender in Persepolis is paramount; although both genders see some form of repression of rights, women are far more effected by the ideology of Islamic fundamentalist government. Furthermore, the geographic theme of culture and ethnicity is also pertinent in Persepolis. Notions of religion,
Women in Vergil’s The Aeneid are often seen as a hindrance in the forward progression of the narrative. The Carthaginian queen Dido serves as a major deterrent in Aeneas journey to reach his divine destiny. In her work “Future Perfect feminine: Women Past and Present in Vergil’s Aeneid” Sharon James comments on Dido as the columniation of Virgil’s themes about women, “the epic past in which women can be rulers; the passion, fury, and irrationality of love; female opposition to, and destruction by, Aeneas’s westward journey toward dynastic marriage, wounded deer, maenads; grief; mourning,” (James 140). Through the course of the narrative women are portrayed to be the antithesis of Aeneas with Dido as the central figure for his struggle. Dido becomes consumed with romantic love for Aeneas forgoing her love for her country, which leads to the destruction of her country. Virgil uses Dido as a cautionary tale for what happens to a civilization when a leader becomes more concerned with personal attachments and rather than

To many Westerners, the overall plight of females in Iran appears tenuous. It is illegal for females above the age of 9 to appear in public with out their heads veiled and bodies entirely covered. Women cannot serve in certain occupations, such as the military. It is difficult for a married woman to divorce her spouse, yet for men the right to divorce is unquestioned and done with ease. Married women in Iran who wish to leave the country for any reason must first obtain the permission of their husbands.
Until recently, much of what we thought we knew about ancient Persia was derived from the writings of Greek historians and philosophers (Borbor 101). Not many original written records—ones produced by Persians in their own time period—have survived to this day. The common view of ancient Persia is therefore based more on myth, speculation, and the historical perspectives of outsiders than concrete archaeological evidence. Even less is known about the status of women in that time period. If asked to describe ancient Persia, most modern readers might picture a civilization in which women were confined to harems or marriages that were essentially a form of enslavement. The truth, however, is much more complicated. A detailed examination of primary documents reveals that women in ancient Persia—particularly women in the royal family—had a surprising degree of social, legal, and economic independence.
After the empowerment of the Islamic Regime, the treatment of women turned tables in Iran. Before the Regime, Iranian women were much like the average American woman during that time. They were able to dress in modern clothes, associate with male counterparts, and have a role in society. But most of this was drastically changed, especially the dress code. Around 1980, the women of Iran were forced into the wearing of a veil. A veil is a piece of cloth used to cover the hair and part of the face. Many women were against the veil and took to the streets to protest. After many protests, the women were still forced to wear the veil. In the graphic novel Persepolis, Marji goes the store and bought some modern clothes. She decided to wear them out to go buy tapes. In the last frame, Marji is approached by two women wearing chadors: “They were the Guardians of the Revolution, the women's branch. This group had been added in 1982, to arrest women who were improperly
All women in their lifetime go through an experience that makes them feel proud and dignified to be a woman. Marjane Satrapi strives to find this feeling of self-worth and the satisfaction of being a woman in Iran as she grows up during her war torn childhood in her bildungsroman, Persepolis. Marjane experiences both positive and negative moments throughout the memoir such as growing up alone in Austria, speaking against women's dress codes, and her constant struggle to make her grandma proud, all which help her learn independence and help form her into a strong feminist woman.
