In the most direct comparison, the lack of women in Star Trek is a huge motivation for the writings of the Star Trek fandom. In comparison musicals such as Wicked directly highlight women, especially the idea of women not in a relationship. Most of the art pieces created from the Wicked Fandom depict Elphaba and Galinda not as powerless love interests but as powerful independent women. The fandom celebrates the fact that their musical was the first major musical not to focus on a romance. Therefore, although the fandom celebrates the fact that their musical is inclusive, it does not feel the need to include more women in the storyline because powerful independent women are already in the storyline.

Being in musical theater for 5 years, I have experienced how the theater fandom has led me to evolve the original work. Before every performance one of my cast members would come up to me and tell me a fan fiction they found on tumblr about my character. They would tell me about an alternate love interest or backstory. This was always interesting to hear, but more interestingly, would affect how I played the character. I could no longer perceive the character in the same way and thus I felt like I had to act out the character in a different way. For example, one year I played Johanna in Sweeney Todd. My friends told me a fanfic about an hypothesized backstory to Johanna. I could no longer view her as simply terrified of her stepfather, but rather mourning the loss of her freedom and mom. Therefore, when I acted as Johannah I added an element of deep sorrow which I felt was more representative to her. I changed my voice to sound more upset, sang with an added length and depth, and widened my eyes to be perceived as sad. This in turn altered the original work because the audience was viewing a version of Johannah that had an added bit of sadness that was not originally written for her. In theater, the audience is not receiving the direct representation of a character. They are simply receiving an interpretation of a character. Therefore, as the fandom evolves, every actor will have a different interpretation of the character and will evolve the way the character is perceived by the
