Women have played a very important part in our lives since the beginning of time. In the United States just within the past one hundred years women have received the right to vote. Hate and acts of violence against women still happen in other country 's today. This famous quote by Abraham Lincoln proves that women should be treated as equals to men: A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will…show more content…
In the book Copper sun a young girl named Amari is given the burden of watching her father, mother, and brother all die in front of her eyes. She sees her whole village burned to the ground just so the remaining people from her tribe can be captured and sold to the white people as slaves. Her whole way of life is destroyed. After she is captured, shackled, and forced to walk day and night in the blistering heat she is brought to a place in Africa called Cape Coast Castle. This is a slave trade center. At Cape Coast Amari is thrown into a dark pit with African women from different tribes. Here she meets a woman named Afi a slave who by her description and what she tells Amari, is a prostitute who works for food, water, and showers. The rest of the slaves are deprived of these human rights. Afi is like the long lost mother figure that Amari was searching for. She told Amari what she could and could not do. Afi took her in like she was her own. As they were boarding the ship to make the trip to America, all the slaves were branded. The men and women were also split up in different parts of the ship. The women had to walk past the male slaves part of the ship where the men were tightly packed and could barely move. When the slaves had to use the restroom they just went where they were standing/laying down, causing disease and death among the male slaves. The women were given a little more room,
