On Friday, October 27th, this author visited the Women’s Resource Center located in Saraland, Alabama. The Saraland location is located at 1088 Industrial Parkway, Suite 3, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Appointments can be made at the Saraland Women’s Resource Center location by calling 251-675-0911. Two other Women’s Resource Centers are located in Mobile on Downtowner Loop and Sage Avenue. There is also a mobile unit that travels to different locations in the Mobile area daily. This author chose the Women’s Resource Center in Saraland because even though living here in Saraland for almost ten years, this author has had no knowledge of this type of community service until now. Establishing a Women and Children's Center that includes practical life skills such as vocational training and educational classes. Otherwise known as Nueva Vida Haven, this emergency shelter for women and children (under the age of 16) provides not only a secure place to sleep, but also cooked meals, clothing, toiletries, and showers. As many as 60 women and children use the shelter, and women are given individual counseling (http://www.sdrescue.org/our-programs/housing/emergency-shelter-for-women-and-children/)
The Texas Women’s Health Program has start off on a foot of controversial opinions, personal ideals, and questionable authority, and with these comes thousands of critiques, arguments, and overall complaints for the program as a whole. The two prominent sides to this story, those who are for the bill and those who are not, both have their own motives and reasons for their beliefs, and I am not different. Biases exist in any opinion, and they become more evident in accordance to how controversial that opinion is, yet I will try my best to break down arguments to their core evidence to best formulate and improve my own opinion.
In an effort to reducing homelessness, the Harriet Tubman Day Program’s mission “is to empower homeless women with a sensitive outreach and a client-centered support services that facilitates successful transition from emergency shelter to stable housing” (Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Washington, Inc., 2008). The 5 day a week program operating from 9am-5:30pm, provides services such as a group and individual life skill workshops, case management, career and job readiness, and mental health services. Life skill workshop topics include emotional health and wellness, finances/budgeting, interpersonal skills, current events, and art expression. As a first day intern I was informed that the population of women have a variety of mental health issues that often go undiagnosed or properly managed. Such mental health concerns prohibit them from wanting to branch out from the comfortability of the facility and transition to stable
Even though there are differing data pertaining the varying needs of abused minority women, due to their cultures being complex, heterogeneous and even diverse there could be differing options rather than a whole single solution. Yet, with $5.8 billion cost of the nation’s economy being used for mental care, mental health care, and loss of productivity for abused victims, figuring out different solutions would be greatly needed. Viewing the results of the study and from the Violence against Women Source book, minority women, especially those who are in impoverished areas and are socially disadvantaged, are in need for financial and psychological help that will aid them. The real question now remains of how to incorporate better resources and programming specifically towards women of color to decrease the intimate partner violence
Interview paper with a Counselor (Rebecca Alexander), and a Social Worker (Mina McVeigh). This interview is for Mrs. Scott’s online class.
Mother Theresa once said “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by "I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.” The field of Human Services is made up of jobs and careers that involve helping to meet the needs of the population. Within this field, there are a wide variety of jobs and titles. One such title is Community Support Specialist. Community Support Specialists with Singing River Services provide a crucial service to society because they guide homeless people through the many processes

Employment agencies will provide clients with help to find and keep a job. These agencies include rehabilitation services for people. By locating jobs for young adult women could relieve some stress as well as give them the opportunity to live a better life. Food and nutrition agencies help clients get healthy meals and the skills to prepare a nutritious meal. Food banks and food delivery are examples of these programs. Housing and shelter organizations help find temporary or permanent housing. Also youth development organizations would help because women need a place where there children both boys and girls can explore. By providing these services light will shine at the end of the tunnel for these women. They will be able to reach the top of the pyramid of self-actualization. By providing these resources a woman’s confidence will increase, the feeling of worrying will diminish, the feeling of belonging will take place and the self-esteem of women and children will change for the
The part of the timeline I feel was most responsible for bringing women’s health to the forefront was during the 1980s and early 1990s. During this time, government policies were changing to include women in scientific studies. The U.S. Public Health Service’s Task Force pushed to include women in biomedical research and clinical trials. The Office of Research on Women’s Health Issues (ORWH) was founded, and the Women’s Health Equity Act was established. The ORWH began to advocate for gender specific research, and the Women’s Health Equity Act provided the funding for that research. Gender specific research meant that women’s health would now be researched independently from that of men, and a new scientific focus would be set on on health
Women in today’s society have a lot more power and say in what they can or cannot do.
The Social Welfare History Project (2004) gave great insight into May’s early life. Like the majority of the clients she worked with, Mary also came from a tumultuous past. Mary was born in Illinois in a town called Belleville. After the death of her parents at a young age, Mary was sent to live with her maternal grandmother in Baltimore, Maryland. It was upon this relocation that Mary developed a deeper understanding for social engagement, and social practice. The Social Welfare History Project described Mary’s grandmother was an active voice in the women’s
There are a few problems identified with the women's center. In listing these problems, the focus will be on addressing one or two of the identified problems. The first issue is the name of the center, while the center has open up its doors to all populations, men, women, and children. The name of the agency remains the same. This may be causing problem in the attracting the right clients and also leaving out other groups like the LGBT and transgender population. Another issues faced by this agency is the lack of necessary resources, tools and technologies to run an counseling facility in a diverse and growing community. The center lacks the most basic tool to run a counseling center, and upgraded computer systems is needed to properly track
The purpose of this research paper is to compare and contrast two smaller sub-communities that are encompassed by the larger community of Santa Maria, California. This paper will promote the beliefs and theories of modern Social Workers, and address the resources and needs of the two communities in question. The compilation of this paper was derived from research that was conducted through interactions and exposure to the residents of these two communities, in conjunction with, interviews and site visits to several community organizations, recreational facilities, and areas of worship. Upon completion of this paper, the
There are a plethora of psychosocial and mental health concerns for women’s shelters populations. These identified general areas of occupational impairment include: daily life activities, work performance, home management, parenting, and leisure participation; cognitive functioning including decision-making, judgment, problem-solving, and following directions; money management, task initiation, self-confidence, coping skills, stress management, and interpersonal relationships (AOTA, 2011) as well as the effects of traumatic experiences on mental health and independent living skills (Davis & Kutter, 1998).
For the service learning project, I teamed up with three of my classmates to volunteer at a lady’s conference at Imani Restoration Centre church (IRCC) on the 16th of September, 2017. IRCC is a non-profit organization which is a Kenyan community founded that focuses on bringing African immigrants together to support and learn the things of God. Samuel Mwangi, the senior pastor of IRCC, said that through the counseling sessions that he holds at the church every Thursday, he discovered that most ladies go through the same challenges. Therefore, he thought it would be great for him to organize a lady’s conference, so that ladies could come together to share and support each other (Personal communication, September, 16, 2017)
