Women's Suffrage/19th Amendment Women’s Suffrage was a huge movement in the 1800’s and the beginning of the 1900’s. Women fought long and hard to earn the right to vote and the right to be considered equal along with men. “The day may be approaching when the whole world will recognize woman as the equal of man” (Susan B. Anthony). They also earned the right to own property. Many men argued against women’s rights. Women struggled for 50 years against the hate and the repressment by men. The women’s suffrage movement lasted for about 50 years. There was a time between 1861-1865 that the movement came to a halt due to the war and instead of focusing on the movement they put their efforts towards the war. Women fought and got the first woman seated at the House of Representatives. They kept fighting until the Democratic Party supported them. It is a hard, undigested, tasteless, devitalized proposition. It is a half-fledged, unmusical, Promethean abomination. It is a quack bolus to reduce masculinity even by the obliteration of femininity” (John Boyle O'Reilly) .They did not think women were equal or deserved to be in politics because they might “mess it up”. Many men resorted to calling women small-minded and weak. Another compelling argument was that women were just not as smart as men. Many men would blatantly ignore other women who were interested in politics. The most used argument for women was that they belonged in the kitchen. They were the home maker and they should let the men handle the politics. All of these arguments resulted in women fighting even harder just to prove men wrong.
