The Women’s Suffrage Movement The Women’s Suffrage Movement was an act by a society of women called suffragists who fought for the right to vote and run for office in all parts of the world. Unofficially, the movement actually started in 1848 when the first women’s rights convention was held in Niagara Falls. In Canada, the movement started in 1878 officially with Dr. Emily Howard Stowe being the leader, and ended in 1940 when Quebec finally gave women the right to vote. The movement was non-violent in Canada, more like a quiet demand, whereas in Britain it often turned violent and riots broke out constantly. When the men went off to the war, the women took on the “men’s jobs” such as farming, factory work, and running stores. This proved to society that women are just as capable as men in the working force. Women could take on more than one responsibility at a time, including work, taking care of children children, household chores and getting groceries. Women being able to do all of these things when the men were gone demonstrated to society that women are capable of doing advanced things. When the suffragists protested well enough to change the laws concerning whether women are “persons” or not, it proved to society that women are powerful and are capable of changing major laws through protest. The Famous Five were very significant to the protest which is why they are known as the Famous Five. A very famous quote by Emily Murphy, one of the Five, says “I believe that never was a country better adapted to produce a great race of women than this Canada of ours, nor a race of women better adapted to make a great country”. — Emily Murphy. This quote basically states that Canada can be a greater country if the people will allow women to be a part of making it one.
