After a long semester of waiting we finally get to watch the film that was promised to us simply titled “Wonder Boys.” I’ve never heard of this movie before December 3rd so I was quite intrigued to see why my professor was so enthused by the mere thought of it. So I patiently waited (which by the way is not a thing I do often) for the following Tuesday to come hoping that it wouldn’t suck. After two days of watching the film I was not let down, my previous pessimistic thoughts were violently drop kicked off of the nearest tower. Not saying it’s the best movie ever, but I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Following Grady Tripp through clouds of marijuana we witness his affair with the Chancellor of his university, meet …show more content…
He keeps a bag of marijuana in his glove compartment and later in the film takes oxycodone chasing it down with a bottle of liquor as if it was a normal thing. No real background is shown to why he does these things maybe from the stress of life or to “enjoy” more of life who knows. Later in the film one of his students; who by the way is renting a room and sexual attracted to him, questions whether or not the fact that he is always under the influence when writing may be the reason to his inability to finish his book. He denies this by revealing that he was under the influence when writing his first book which was an award winning novel. I don’t believe that marijuana was the reason that Tripp was unable to finish his new book, instead I think the reason for that was because he wasn’t writing for him anymore he was writing for the people who loved his first novel I think he was afraid of failing after getting so much …show more content…
So after we learn that this dog is in fact blind, which is ironic seeing as he’s sees clear as day while his owner the chairman is the only one blind to the secret affair. Tripp goes outside to snow covered backyard, there he sees his student James Leer holding what seems to be a gun. James assures Tripp that the gun is fake and it shoots bottle caps. Tripp gets James to come inside the Chancellor’s home with him so see Marilyn Monroe’s jacket. After hearing a sound of someone coming under stairs Tripp goes to see who it was soon after the chairman’s dog bites Tripp. Hearing Tripp scream James shoots the dog with the gun he claimed was a fake killing the dog. Throughout the movie they keep this dead dog in Tripp’s back trunk which symbolizes to me the weight or pressure keeping Tripp from writing his next book. Tripp was unable to finish his book which tied in with how Tripp lived his life. I don’t think Tripp was the type to want to choose or take control of his own life. He was married to a woman who he wasn’t even happy being with while working as a professor which he didn’t seem to care for. He didn’t do what made him happy and he left things incomplete or up in the wind. Not sure if he really wanted to just let his wife leave or start something real with his lover he decided to ignore those things hoping
In the era of The American Civil War their were many battles between the North and the South; also known as the Union and the Confederates. Although there were a lot of deaths in this war, The Battle of Gettysburg has been recorded to be one of the deadliest battles in history. The Killer Angels was written to be based on The Battle of Gettysburg; in which the author claimed that he wrote the story in a different angle than the way they teach it in “school”, the story was based on the perspective of the people themselves. (Killer Angels pg xiii) Although the soldiers had different motivational factors; I will go over the soldier’s reasons for fighting, the difference in the reasons that each side had, and the matter that enabled these men to fight in the face of death.
After reading the essay written by Jesus Villahermosa I believe his thesis statement is “Given my extensive experience dealing with violence in the workplace and at schools and colleges, I do not think professors and administrators, let alone students, should carry guns”. In his second paragraph, he lays out reason as to why he feels this way and shows that he can be considered an expert in firearm safety. Giving information into his background reinforces his position and add to his argument against arming people on college campuses. Some may be surprised that he is against having armed professors and students on campus because of his background. However, I am not surprised that he is strongly against having firearm toting professors, administrators and students throughout campuses. He is properly trained, experienced with firearm safety and marksmanship which in turn gives him great support to his argument.
The film has different thoughts then the story. Like said in the intro the man tries to kill the dog and the dog thinks the man is trying to play, but in the film the dog lashed out.
Some critics may say that the untidiness of scenes affects the comical nature of the film but, I think a
Jared’s five-page thesis paper was written very well, so well that it felt like the story was more of a narrative of events I have never heard of. This will make for a great paper because it grabs the reader and keeps him/her entertained throughout the paper, but there was a lack of material in this paper that should be mentioned. For example, the source material seems a little sparse for this essay. This can be seen by how there are only two sources in Jared’s paper, yet he is writing on a lot of material that feels like is being summarized. This is fine, however, as the assignment was only five pages, so I feel confidant that Jared will maximize the amount of sources he will use. Additionally, there was no historiography mentioned in this
The Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865. Perhaps the most influential war in American history, the Civil War was fought between the northern states and the southern states of America over slavery. Shortly after Abraham Lincoln was elected as the president on March 4, 1861, South Carolina Seceded from the Union. Other states followed in suit, forming the Confederate States of America with its capital at Montgomery, Alabama, its president Jefferson Davis. As controversy flared higher as a result of this event, the Confederates took Fort Sumter. Soon, the Union joined the war. The northern states were referred to as the Union army, with leaders including Ulysses S. Grant. The Southern states were referred to as the Confederate
The Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeannette Walls, tells the story of Jeannette's upbringing and her road to adulthood. Jeannette, and her siblings, were raised by dysfunctional, poor, and sometimes homeless parents, Rose Mary and Rex Walls. The Walls children were pretty much abandoned by their parents and in some cases they were forced into making their own money, or stealing food just so they would not starve. Rose Mary and Rex Walls allowed the children to do anything they wanted, whenever they wanted to do it, but that did not stop Jeannette from being successful. She recognized that she did not want to live her life the same way her parents have lived their lives. In The Glass Castle Jeannette Walls believes that sometimes people are actually
“The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto” is a adventure, and a mystery all in one book. It is placed all over the world, and is mainly in the 1940s through the 2000s.
The essay Citizen Ben: A worldly American’s Seven Great Virtues by Walter Isaacson is an essay begins talking about Benjamin Franklin. When we think of Benjamin Franklin our minds automatically turn to the story about him flying a kite in a lightening storm with a rod on to prove that lightening was electricity. This is one thing that Franklin did but he did many more as well, in fact it says that he was an inventor diplomat, writer and business strategist. He helped bring the country that we live in today about. There are many views on him that show him in a good light and some that show him in a bad light. There are some that saw that he was shallow and didn’t show great
Imagine if you were a young 15 year old girl or boy growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas and the Supreme Court just ruled that school segregation is unconstitutional. So you enroll in a previously white only school. As you enter on your first day of school, there are people outside that school yelling and screaming at you. There are armed men outside your school that will not let you enter. You eventually get let in through a side door.
In early October, the Mother’s League of Central High and racist white students planned to have a “walk out” of school, to protest integration. Almost 200 kids participated, but some of them had gotten a bad feeling about it when they saw not many people were joining in. The ones who left the school went to a park near the school, where they hung up a black-looking straw dummy. They all took turns beating the dummy, kicking it, stabbing it, and then eventually burning it while other kids cheered. Some boys held Confederate Flags while they burned and beat the black dummy. None of the hostile kids were questioned by the police or in trouble by the school.
A freshman college level English Composition course aims to improve students' abilities with writing, critical thinking, mechanics and usage, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. By studying English 101 at Luzerne County Community College, I will work diligently to improve in all of these aspects. My main focus is to develop skills specifically to create clear and concise thesis statements, strong and persuasive essays with cajolement, and to develop different perspectives on narratives and other essays. These writing skills may also improve my critical thinking and reading skills.
I, Steven Tellez, feel that I am a good candidate to serve in National Honor Society because I've experienced what it is to be part of the National Honor Society. In middle school I served in National Junior Society for two years and we participated in many events that helped towards the community and in my serving I helped induct new members into the program by lighting the candle to one of the four main attributes of National Honor Society. One thing I loved to do in N.J.H.S was help with the surrounding community when we got the chance. And in my everyday life I still help with my community and neighborhood such as feeding a stray dog on the street or help rebuild a playground that needs repairs or a cleanup. The joy of helping other people

In the 1960s he starts dealing as well with smoking marijuana. In the early 1970s he had entered the cocaine trade, using
