In The Natural by Bernard Malamud, Malamud displays the magnitude of how an individual’s decisions can influence their life. Malamud’s main protagonist, Roy Hobbs, is the leading example of this idea, as Hobbs continually faces both his internal struggles stemming from his desire for success, and external struggles attributed to his roller-coaster of a professional baseball career. Malamud uses Hobbs and the sport of baseball as a metaphor for typical American life by depicting Hobbs’ struggles as similar to any average American. Therefore, through the life of Roy Hobbs, Malamud alludes to the average American and explains how moral attitude can lead to a person’s success or downfall.
In the story, The Natural, certain characters and events are portrayed in a distinctive way that makes this story unique to other books and shows the typical writing style of the narrator. The author uses a repetitive writing technique that is impossible to overlook. The writer of this book is able to catch the reader’s eye with his concept of the importance of beautiful description. The Natural, by Bernard Malamud, uses great imagery that makes the story appealing.
The author does an excellent job writing about disabilities, getting bullied for being different, and most importantly, overcoming the bullying. The main character Auggie knew that giving up home schooling and starting 5th grade would mean getting stared at and teased for his severe facial deformity. The kids pointed, laughed, looked away, teased, but eventually, they began to see Auggie as a boy with a great sense of humor who was smart and not so different from many of them.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a new school with no friends and a different face? To have everyone look at you and make a repelling face? That’s what it was like for August Pullman in the 5th grade. Auggie is different that everybody else in 5th grade. Auggie was born with a facial deformity so he looks different that other people he has had 27 so far in his life. Auggie goes to a school called Beecher Prep. In my opinion Beecher Prep has had a positive effect on Auggie’s life because now he has made more friends like Summer, Jack Will, Max G, Max W, and Reid. Sometimes it is hard for auggie to fit in when people like julian step into the picture, but overall Beecher Prep has made Auggie’s life a little easier.
August Pullman is a 10-year-old boy who has a mandibulofacial dysostosis. Which causes his face to appear different. Because of Auggie’ appearance, people a very unkind to him. Auggie has been home schooled up until the 5th grade, but his parents decide it's time for him to go to a real school. They register him to Beecher Prep and take him to meet the principal, Mr. Tushman. Before Auggie starts school he takes a tour with three students who will be in the same grade as he was going in. On the tour, he meets Jack Will, Charlotte, and Julian. Jack Will was the kind kid, but Julian was really mean to
I don’t know why but this always freaked me out”(Palacio 211). Readers can sense that August is a nervous kid because he has been called some names that a super mean.
Have you ever felt like something was going on around you that no one told you about? Like everyone knew about it but you? The plague, which is how this was described in Wonder by R.J. Palacio, at one point everyone did not want to be touched by Auggie in fear that they would catch the plague, he was being avoided. It is that feeling you get when everyone but you is at the party, and you sit at home wondering why you weren’t invited. Unfortunately, that sounds a lot like my high school career. I was avoided for who I was and I could never find a friend to invest in me, but eventually it became something good.
In the novel Wonder, by R.J Palacio, the reader develops a new understanding of August’s life at Beecher Prep through the eyes of Summer and Jack Will. “I [...] warned mom about August’s face[...] August was coming over[...] I hadn't prepared her enough.” (Palacio 127). This expresses to the reader that Summer tries to protect her friend from being exposed and mocked for the way he looks because she knows that August experiences that continuously. Additionally, Summer, as the light in August’s darkness, demonstrates that she will not be his friend because of Mr. Tushman like Jack, but because she intends to be the safe haven for August. Jamie,a young boy, screams at August because his face scared him, he tells his mother “ I couldn't help

The theme of Wonder shows the reader to be loving and kind no matter how the person acts or looks. R.J. Palacio, the author of Wonder shows in the story that students at Beecher Prep, Auggie’s school make fun of him. According to the text they call him names such as by “rat boy, freak, monster, freddy krueger, E.T., gross-out, lizard face, and mutant.” This quote shows how hurtful names can be. They leave ugly and nasty notes in his locker. On the other hand, there are a few students that stand up for him and help him through the hard times. Two students, Jack and Julian got into a fist fight because Jack had gotten stuck with Auggie and Julian wanted to change that since he thought Jack was bummed about being with him. Julian asked Jack “do
In the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the author, writes the story from the perspectives of Jack and Summer, his peers, helping the reader to further understand August’s transition to Beecher Prep. For example, when Summer sees August sitting at the lunch table by himself, she decides to link herself with August: “[t]he weirdest-looking kid [she’s] ever seen, yes. But just a kid.” (Palacio 119). With Summer demonstrating her warmth and hospitality to August shows the reader that what she sees in others, differences from her companions. This also indicates that Summer does not hang out with her gossiping classmates or the vicious name callers against August. On the other hand, Jack, another one of August’s cohorts, notices August’s
Seeing life through the eyes of a ten year old is fascinating. In Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, the reader sees school, life, and disability through August Pullman's eyes. The book follows Auggie as he go to school for the first time in his life. Disability is brought up a lot, which makes sense considering Auggie has a type of mandifibulofacial dysostosis that causes his face to look different. Although a facial disfigurement may not seem like a disability, it fits the criteria and is covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Due to the dozens of tough surgeries he went through as a child, the resulting weakness from the surgeries, and the random illnesses that he contracted as he grew up, Auggie was homeschooled until fifth grade when he transferred to Beecher Prep. There, he found a variety of classmates, friends, and bullies. Throughout Wonder, Palacio argues that different reactions to disability from family, friends, self, and society as a whole can affect people with disabilities.
