I have always been fascinated with the way that floor plans are drawn out and how blueprints are laid out. When I was a kid, I would play with legos and finish building a structure within an hour or two. I would then take it apart and build something different with the
A person is capable of learning a skill if they put their time and effort towards what they feel passionate about. Has someone ever wanted to develop an ability that you practice it for hours a day? I did, I have spent around 100 hours a year trying to perfect my loving skill, volleyball. It was a hardworking skill, but enjoyable as well. It is my way of life. The most important years of my life was my volleyball experience in High School.
For my Genius hour project I have decided to build an outdoor bench. My goal is to build a four to five foot wooden bench that also has a back support. I have built things such as birdhouse and little project but never have I build something quite this big. Some key materials that ill need is 2 by 4 wood, nails/screws, paint, and drills. It is important that i follow all safety rules because it is highly

In addition, teachers should encourage safety with rules and elaborate about why the rules are in place. A teacher can make woodworking meaningful by sparking interest, documenting progress, offer assistance, provide vocab, and exciting new activities.

A builder is a person who constructs something by putting parts or material together over a period of time. They follow orders on how to construct the build or just completely does it on their own. Every since I was growing up, I was very fond of putting things together. Starting from putting in the correct letter, shaped like a block, to the corresponding hollow shaped mold of the letter to free making starships and planes with lego bricks. Whenever I start I build, there is a switch at the back of my head that turns on fully committed mode on. Even on a simple wooden bird house, I would spend hours on handcrafting it to make it the best bird house there is. If I see a slight mistake, I would be forced to redo and start over since I just can't

Teaching a specialism of any matter requires the teacher themselves to be competent and confident with their own abilities first. To be a competent carpenter requires lots of experience, dedication and time – without dedication, you will not put in the time and in turn not gain the experience. Hence dedication is a fundamental element, which is expressed to all the construction students at Harlow College, in order for them to succeed. Dedication goes hand in hand with motivation, motivation is developed from enjoyment. Therefore making a positive rapport between student and teacher is a very important because ‘good teacher-student relationships are based on mutual respect. The student respects the teacher for their teaching skills, personal qualities, knowledge and professionalism’ (Petty, 2004) which puts emphasis on the teacher who is at the core of the motivation behind any prosperous student.
It's really amazing what some people are able to create out of a few pretty simple items. For example, some are able to turn old junk into fantastic pieces of art. Naturally, we don't all have this gift of creativeness, but that doesn't mean we can't create some pretty simple, but beautiful, projects of our own.
Of course the more we did crafts the better we got at it. We learned from the many mistakes we made in whatever craft we did and we either corrected it or left alone and be more aware of it next time we did the same project or a variation of it. By doing crafts it also helped us focus on a solution for a problem we may be having at work, school, or in life. It is like the “deep practice” Coyle has mention in his chapter “The Sweet Spot”. Coyle, D. (2009) So you can bet many times I will be doing some kind of craft when I get home from work, while watching
Ever since I was little I always enjoyed standing beside my grandpa as he worked on projects in his shop. The smell of sawdust and the sound of power tools sparked my curiosity. My grandpa has a history with woodworking. He worked on building boats for his job and he was very good at it. People often come to him and asks him for help building things and he for the most part takes on the job and does it well. I’ve watched him over the years build one Chris-Craft boat and another Thompson from basically scratch. Just recently a

“The land flourished because it was fed from so many sources-because it was nourished by so many cultures and traditions and peoples” (Johnson). In today’s society, immigration is a controversial topic. Regardless of current views towards immigration, the nation is experiencing a daily influx of immigrants, particularly those with Hispanic heritage. To address this dramatic increase, a new program, The Influential, is effectively working to educate both U.S. citizens and immigrants. Instead of students taking two years of Spanish in high school, students will be mandated to take Spanish in the fifth grade and above. The Influential program focuses primarily on school aged children, affecting change in the mindsets of the nation’s youth that will carry the country into a more culturally aware future.
