In life, sometimes random events will lead to one’s death. These two stories, “Popular Mechanics” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, both portray this idea. “Popular Mechanics,” written by Raymond Carver, has a baby torn apart by its own mother and father's hate for one another. The mother randomly saw the picture of the child and took it, and this stirred up emotions in the both of them. Enough emotions to stop paying attention to the child’s well being. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is written by Flannery O’Connor, and in it a family of six crash because of their cat, and a murderer of a sort drives by randomly, eventually leading to the death of them all. In these two stories, both the important characters die in the climax, and both characters, baby and cat, are catalysis in the story. The style of each story is negative writing and destructive in nature.
The story that I selected to tell my classmates for this week's Discussion Assignment was "Popular Mechanics" by Rymond Carver. According to Carver (1978), this story is centred on a married couple that are having a disagreement. The unnamed man then begins to pack his belongings and leave his spouse. She yells at him saying, "Son of a bitch! I'm so glad you're leaving!
There is one particular theme in the story about weather disasters and mainly three reasons they are dangerous.

Design: The design of Republicans website is clean (meaning, it does not contain any unnecessary information) and well organized. The navigation bar is easy to navigate; it highlights the most important topics that the party attempts to emphasize for the website visitors. For instance, there are categories on the website saying “2016 Candidates,” “Hillary Clinton,” “Our Latino Leaders,” etc.

Carver begins with the story?s conflict, a relationship between a man and woman that has already gone extremely wrong. He does not need to tell the reader why or how this relationship came to this point. Carver relies on the reader to know the usual reasons that cause people to split up. Therefore, this gives readers the opportunity to attach their own explanation. As the title, ?Popular Mechanics? implies, it is the common workings of relationships that can be applied throughout this story.
The two stories of “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “Popular Mechanics” by Raymond Carver are similar yet differ in a way. The biggest and most noticeable similarity is the irony that these stories consist of. Both of these stories can be made apparent of the horrific ironic endings. However, these two stories’ writing styles differ in many ways.“Popular Mechanics” is apparently written using minimalism ideas, where “The Story of an Hour,” has some minimalism but is more of a classic short story. The two stories could be categorized as minimalism stories but written in different styles to portray different meanings. There are many comparisons between the two stories but they also reveal different ideas and meanings.
In the story “Popular Mechanics”, Raymond Carver writes in a minimalistic manner causing the text to have more meaning than it seems. Carver uses symbolism, repetition, and metaphors to characterize the woman as distraught and agitated towards the man. This displays that the relationship between the man and the woman is very dysfunctional. Throughout the story, the woman seems more affected by the situation than the man. Also, the story ends on a devastating note, depicting the deep meaning behind their relationship and leading to a universal theme.
With a unique and brilliant style of writing, Raymond Carver has left a lasting and outstanding impact on the history of short stories. Even though Raymond Carver left a long impact, his life was of the opposite. Like Raymond Carver’s famous award winning stories, his life was short. Raymond Carver was born on May 25th, 1938 in Clatskanie, Oregon, a mill town on the Columbia River. Carver grew up in Yakima, Washington. Carver had three members to his small family, his mother, his father, and brother. Carver’s only had one sibling, his younger brother, James Franklin Carver. Carver’s mother worked as a waitress and a retail clerk while Carver’s father worked as a fisherman and a saw mill worker. Many say that a skilled sawmill worker and
Raymond Carver's symbols, use of details, and his inventive title really bring together this unusual story, to convey the theme that not all relationships end happily. He describes every little bit of this story with brilliant detail. The symbolism is indescribable, and the title is tricky but yet it makes absolute sense when you pick it apart. Popular Mechanics is truly a very meaningful short story. Carver packs so much significance into such a short piece of literature that this is no other word for it but amazing.
The literary critic Bryan Aubrey further discusses Carver’s work in a “Critical Essay on a Small, Good Thing”. The critical analysis explores how Carver uses minimalism to emphasize menace in people’s lives. The short and condensed sentences provide a realistic and serious tone for the reader, a good example of this is shown in the short story “A Small, Good Thing”. The tone that is present throughout the story is sadness. Sadness helps create the theme of the story that the world we all live in is a tough one. Carver use’s this theme as a reminder to his readers that life can be cruel at times, and the only thing people can do is reach out to each other as the Weiss family did with the Baker after their son’s death. The minimalistic style used in this short story synthesizes the underlying reality that bad things can happen to innocent people at any given moment. No matter who you are and how many good deeds you may have done, we still all share the same fate called death. Carver use’s death as his source of hidden menace because many people are paranoid that their lives may suddenly end, no one fully understands what life and death is. This is a smart way to provide a necessary tension
