Interesting topic. I literally had this discussion a few weeks ago at my workplace. In my current career we are having a hard time to find good reliable people and I have experienced what you have discussed with trying to fill a position. I believe the work ethic begins at home. I am an young millienal, but my work ethic do not fit the stereotype given to millennials. My family are dairy farmers and we raise tobacco so I learned at a young age what hard work is and how important it is to be reliable and dependable. Throughout my research I have noticed that kids who worked hard and were independent at a young age became more successful in their futures. Parents who encourage their kids to work hard in their own advantage are giving their kids a jump start on life. There are many reasons that parents should work their kids but the main ones are, that kids will be given a jump-start in life, and they will learn important life skills like learning to be independent.

In our day and age, willingness and motivation to work is rare in most businesses. You may think it is due to poor pay, but that is only a small portion of the problem. Many problems start with the youth. Young adults dropping out of school for careers, accepting poor pay, and not moving past a low end job. Poor pay causes a majority of unhappiness. The higher- ups, such as our employers, or even the corporate managers, can sometimes make the lower workforce feel useless, hated, and mis treated. During my junior year of high school, I worked for a company called HMS Host at my local airport. That is where I created my work ethic. I know that I am a hard worker and when I am told to do a job, I try to do it right. I remember this one time I was asked by my manager to stay a couple hours more because they were short staffed for the afternoon. I have been working since I was 15 years of age. In these several years of working I believe I have been introduced to a collectivist standard of work ethics. Occupations like waitress, bartender, server, retail representative, and billing specialist have all been addressed in a group setting with one or two managers to oversee these groups of people. Many complain about the work ethic of millennials – they are lazy and unmotivated. This is not true. We work hard. We want to use our knowledge and talents to make a difference and contribute to society. But the American Dream we were promised in return for our hard work is no longer seems available to us. We have trouble finding good jobs once we graduate college. The jobs we are able to find do not pay as well as jobs have in the past. Women are now more likely than men to attend college and receive a degree but we are not reaping the benefits of this education.
Having a good work ethic can change a lot of other aspects in your life. Before I learned a lesson about good work ethics, I was very frustrated with my job. Work was the last thing on my mind. I did not care if I showed up late or did not show up at all. I was lucky I did not lose my job. When I did show up, I tended to act rude towards the customers if they had any problems or gave me any reason to be mad. I watched the clock for my time to leave and it only made the time drag on longer. I was about to quit my job without looking for another job first. I also got angry when someone would ask me to do anything besides what I was doing in my station.
