It is not so simple to just enforce the evaluation. There are many challenges that come with it and that is possibly the reason why not enough attention paid to it. I have decided to study the Bangladesh Muslim Center, also known as the Jame Masjid/Mosque by the locals for my ethnographic fieldwork project. The mosque is located in the Kensington neighborhood of the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The place of worship may be found on the corner of McDonald Avenue and Cortelyou Road; and the F train runs right in front of the building. It is in such an area where at times the noise level is at a maximum due to several building supply and material warehouses nearby, trucks passing by, and construction on the subway line. At other times, one may hear a pin drop.
A yeoman owned his own land and often farmed it himself. His land would be equivalent to 30 - 120 acres. A Medieval yeoman was required to be armed and trained with a bow. Wealthy yeoman would be expected to also be trained and armed with a sword, dagger and the longbow. Yeoman were therefore often employed to guard and protector the nobility.
While conducting my ethnography I have interviewed five All-Girl members, and four Coed members of the Spirit program. By interviewing one more All-Girl members I hope to even out my biases due to being a part of the Coed team. Yet, before defining the differences found between the two teams, I will share the apparent similarities. Both teams show strong linguistic accommodations which I have observed at numerous appearances, such as changing the way one would speak due to their audience. When present at an appearance all members of the Spirit program are expected to intermingle and socialize with attendees. During the course of this exchange it became apparent that accommodating for the age of audience drastically changed the way the team members spoke. For example, when Jules Wazny was speaking to an elderly man she reduced the tempo at which she spoke and asked questions about the game and respectfully shook his hand; yet when she was speaking to a child she spoke in a higher pitch tone, offered the child her poms to play with, and asked questions such as how old the child was. These actions represent convergence, changing ones language to better fit the style of the recipient, which was not only found with All-Girl Cheerleader Jules Wazny, but also throughout the program. An example from a Coed member was Vivi Benbrook changing how she spoke with a middle age male, in a calm and respectful manor asking questions of the game such as where his seats where, and if he thought we were going to win. Contrast this to when she spoke to an elderly women, she used a higher pitch when asking if she was excited, and telling her to stay warm in this cold weather. With our modern day technology and ever changing society, it is important to keep folk cultures alive and not allow them to slip away. “Piecing it all Together” by bell hooks describes how she remembers her grandmother patiently and skillfully telling the story of her life through the art of sewing a tedious quilt. Chris Rose in his article “Let the Good Times Roll” depicts the tragedy, perseverance of a community, and the total comment from all to rise up and move on and celebrate their heritage and traditions. Folk cultures are the backbones that shape and mold every individual during their lifetime blending together traditions and skills, foods, beliefs, heritage and shared values that are taught and/or passed down from generation to generation, providing a common identity or direction for people within a family or community.
For my ethnographic fieldwork, I decided to do my research on the Jewish culture. I interviewed a friend of mine at her house, which is the field site I decided to work in. To protect her identity I changed her name to Rebecca. As soon as I got to her house I notice there was a small piece of metal on the side of her doorpost with hebrew text written on it. I enter the house and she greeted me and took me to her living room.In her living room I noticed she had a tray of bite size cookies for us and a Snapple drink. The cookies were sweet and they did not have strong odor. My friend wore black slacks a white blouse and a star necklace around her neck. After a while, her brother and father came in and I noticed they had a little cap on the top of their heads. I asked her questions about her religion and culture.
Overweight is fast becoming an ubiquitous trait in Australia. According to the 2005 National Health Survey, 53.6% of Australians reported being overweight, defined as having a Body-Mass Index (BMI) of over 25%. (AIHW, 2005, p. 182). This is partly caused by diets which are high in saturated fat and dependent on processed foods over fresh foods. It is also caused by a continuously sedentary lifestyle, as most Australians perform their job sitting down in an office setting and are, furthermore, compelled stay tethered to their computers lest they miss an important communication.
The heritage assessments are very important method in view to evaluate a person as entirely and aim at the characteristic of a person that may not be as apparent if not appropriately reviewed. Trying to evaluate and find out about one’s heritage is helpful in shaping one’s core thinking and knowing the importance of how their heritage and culture plays a part of what they believe and whom they are. Recognizing a person’s heritage can help in knowing their current cultural practices and it also gives the answer for why they may practice specific thinking. Our behavior, values and beliefs are greatly influences the culture in which we work or raised. Cultural Impact
Critics claim that by objectifying culture, public folklorists limit or deny the agency of the practitioners of traditions whom they represent. This article analyzes how public folklorists engage dialogically with community members to mutually shape frames of representation, while facilitating community cultural self-determination. Arguing against a view of objectification as categorically exploitative, I demonstrate how agency is pursued and accomplished through cultural representations that may entail objectification but generate benefits for community members as well as for folklorists.
This is my first time that I come to New York, so I am curious about many things in this new place, such as the famous resorts, and the people here. As we know, the Times Square is very famous in New York. When I was in China, I hope I can visit Times Square, because I saw Times Square was very great in some of the opening of American series. Now, I am in New York, and I have enough chances to visit Times Square whenever I want. In there, it gives me a new horizon to understand the culture that is different from China.

There are inherent problems with basing a racial identity around the religion of your oppressor. Much like in Rome, Christianity was given to African Americans at the beginning of their advent in America to pacify them early. Christianity is an acculturating mechanism that continues to rob these displaced Africans of their own culture and former values even today. The arguments that Christianity can be/has been made into a mechanism of liberation has fallen flat from how many African Americans were willing to stay complacent in the face of revolution because of it – Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey included. Martin Luther King did not win over African Americans because he was a pastor, albeit it played a strong part because of the foundations
The aim of this part is to investigate how anti-oppressive, Human rights, social systems and feminist theories can be used to guide different interventions in social work practice in reflecting on scenario. Social worker need to develop an understanding ideas of anti-oppressive practice, as this will help them by offering choice to service users and will prepare them in how they deal effectively with power differences by addressing the impact of oppression from all angles. It is well recognized that the social work relationship is a significant factor impacting client change and outcomes regardless of the intervention or theoretical approach used. Anthropology is field where research plays the biggest part in dissecting and understanding a topic. Surveys and questionnaires, are not as effective in this field as it would have been in engineering is because, anthropology deals with people. According to me people would not be slight bit interested divulging the details of their life with a stranger, whom they just met on a piece of flimsy paper. Even if they are willing to do that, they may only give a vague sketch of their life or the worst case scenario, where the participants are illiterate. Thus Field work regardless how excruciatingly long and hard it is, it is very important because it gives the holistic view on a topic as an outsider as well as an insider.
The diversity of culture is an incredible notion. It is unfathomable how the anatomy of the human race is so similar, yet so different in the behaviors and ideas that take place. The two primary cultures I am focusing on throughout this essay are the differentiation between popular culture, and indigenous culture. I will also make the point of folk culture, and how it has slowly transformed itself from its self sufficiency, to relying more on the ways of popular culture.
