Work-Related Stress in the Nursing Environment In today’s health care environment, work-related stress plays a major role in the performance of nursing professionals. The nursing profession is significantly affected by the effects of stress and this often determines the quality of care that patients receive. Work-related stress develops when an individual loses the ability to cope with increasing service demands, overwhelming responsibilities, and loss of control over their environment. Preceding research has proven that high stress levels result in more staff absences, staff turnover, diminished job satisfaction, and additional costs which in return only further exacerbates staff stress levels (Wright, 2014). Nursing managers can begin the recognition process by educating their staff on the cause and effect of stress and ensure they are well-informed on the impact of work-related stress in the nursing environment. The impact of stress may result in a loss of motivation, disappointment, confusion, headaches, mood swings, shorter breaks, change in sleeping and eating patterns, and variations in work attendance (Health and Safety Executive, 2014). Negative stress can cause many physical and psychological issues and can lead to overall exhaustion and prolonged illness (McIntosh & Sheppy, 2013). By being aware of these signs, coping strategies can be implemented to alleviate current stress and help prevent further stress from developing. Nursing managers are responsible for not only each individual but the staff as a whole. If an individual is stressed, it can and often does have far reaching effects on the whole nursing team. An increased stress level within a nursing team slowly begins to decrease the productivity of the entire team and adversely affects the quality of patient care. Stress within a nursing team not only affects a specific unit, but also can also threaten the organizations overall success. The nursing manager must be able to identify why a team is not operating as efficiently as it should.
