Working at non-profit organization requires an employee to understand their company’s mission and values. At Easter Seals Southern California (History, 2015) the agency’s mission is to provide exceptional services to all people with disabilities or other special needs and their families and to ensure that they have an equal opportunity to live, learn, work and play in their communities (History, 2015). ESSC provides a number of services and the department I work in is Autism Services, which provides therapy, treatment, and training to individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). As a result many Program Managers meet with their new direct staff members and outline their own descriptions, usually a limited one. For example, the Program Manager would outline how they would track the staffer’s attendance, answer policy questions, hold the staffer accountable to the Personnel Policy Manual (i.e. employee handbook) and be notified of any cancellations or request for time off. For me, I wanted to develop a professional rapport with each of my direct staffers and help grow their skill set. I wanted staffers to use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the therapy technique used to treat our clients, in their own lives and see how it can be applied to any living organism to create change. Unfortunately, I was unable to effectively train and develop a staffer, which resulted in the staffer being transferred to another Program Manager. The Behavior Interventionist (BI) is an employee who implements behavior strategies and program treatment plans to clients diagnosed with ASD. The BI is expected to manage maladaptive behaviors, implement treatment plan, have a basic understanding of ABA, and attend meetings and training. One of my direct staffers was assigned to two of my clients, which allowed me more opportunities to provide training. For the sake of confidentiality and privacy the staffer will be called John Doe.
