Working Fire by Zach Unger The book that I read was entitled working fire and the author is Zach Unger. I thought this book was a very good book. Everything in it seemed very real and you could picture everything that was happening in the book. The first chapter in the book is pretty much the present but the end of the chapter leaves you wondering what is going to happen. In the beginning of this chapter Zach is talking about his life at the fire station and also is talking about confirming stills. The confirming stills mean that there is a fire and that the fire is a real working fire. Zach is also talking about some of the guys that are on the department with him. One guy that he talks …show more content…
She tells him that he will be fine and that he will meet a lot of nice people there. Then the fire trucks come into the training area and the recruits of the academy have a meeting. In this meeting they just talk about the academy and what how things will be run there. Then Zach meets Captain Gold. Captain Gold is a very intimidating person and no one wants to get on Golds bad side, but Zach gets on his bad side the first day. What happened was Zach was admitted late to the academy and he couldn't get all of his uniform on time. The thing that he could not get was shiny black shoes. So, he had to wear some old shoes that he had at home. Gold did not like this at all and wanted to know if Zach thought he was special and told him that he would be watching him, this is a big sign that Gold does not seem to like Zach at all. After his run in with Gold, Zach meets Antoine. Antoine was a firefighter is Modesto for seven years and used to teach academies. Zach and Antoine begin to talk and Zach is talking about how he thinks that he is in trouble and stuff with Gold but Antoine tells him not to worry about it and that Gold knows that Zach couldn't get his boots in time he just wanted to yell at someone. Zach's recruit class was called Three-Nine-Eight and they had to yell this when they did most things. Then Zach talks about how

The author of A World Lit Only by Fire is William Manchester. This book was written in three chapters. In the first chapter he starts to talk about the dark ages between A. D. 400 and A.D. 1000. He begins to write about this time period were there are no survivors left to be offended. This author attempted to write this book to defend an unpopular view among historians that the medieval world was backward in the terms of culture, religion, and technology. This world was destroyed by the blossoming of confidence in reason and the progress of art, literacy, astronomy, geography, and theology. In the first chapter the book is speaking about Manchester’s conception of the medieval mindset.
There are many things that the word gold can refer to in the novel the outsiders, it can portray Johnny or Pony boy. I say this because a person like Johnny on comes around once in a life time and when you find a friend like that you will want to cherish it forever. For someone like pony boy he was a different type of gold.
This meant that the bricks had specks of gold in them. We were taken to another room and shown the gold in the bricks. Each brick would glitter with the gold flakes in it.
A World Lit Only By Fire is William Manchester 's attempt to write a book of popular history defending the increasingly unpopular view among historians that the medieval world was culturally, religiously, and technologically backward. This world was destroyed by the blossoming of confidence in reason and the progress of art, literacy, astronomy, geography, and theology. The book is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces Manchester 's conception of the medieval mindset. The second chapter includes a lengthy discussion about how this mindset was continuously challenged by a number of individuals and movements. Finally, the last chapter explores in detail the adventure of Ferdinand Magellan whom Manchester believes shattered the medieval mind and heralded the coming of modernity.
In 1871, a dangerous fire destroyed most of the city of Chicago. Although it was a destructive fire, it made positive turning points in history. The Great Chicago Fire improved firefighting and new buildings which used fireproof material. After everything settled down, the tragedy united the people of Chicago together even though Mrs. O’Leary was unfairly blamed.
Imagine losing your whole family in one week, now imagine half of a population being wiped out. Armenian genocide killed half the population between the years 1915 and 1917. People were taken from their homes, imprisoned, and killed. The book Forgotten Fire, written by Adam Bagdasarian, is about a 13-year-old Armenian boy who survives the genocide. Vahan embarked on a long tough journey to get to safety in Constantinople where he would be free from the Turkish government.
Vahan and his family are caught in the middle of the Armenian Genocide. In the book, Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian, Sarkis Kendrian is a well respected Armenian mandarin of the city of Bitlis with several children and very little to worry about. That, of course, was until the beginning of the Armenian Genocide. Just after the beginning of it, multiple military personnel showed up at the front door of the home of Sarkis. They said he was wanted by the government and even though he knew that was not true he went with it. He, along with many other men from his town, were taken into the streets where they were killed. Shortly after, two of Vahan’s older brothers were taken behind the house and killed as well. This left the mother, Vahan, and his sisters and brother on their own as they were taken by the military along with many other members
Staying gold means staying innocent and pure. It can also mean that the hardships in life have not been discovered by a person yet. A person can only be gold if they have not yet learned how to overcome the struggles that are thrown at them by society. To stay gold can also mean enjoying the little things in life and living in the moment. If one has not been through some of life’s worst experiences, such as death or heartbreak, they can be considered pure.
The colour golden is spoken to in terms of time. He is comparing the value of time to the value of gold when he says "Golden...Time let me play" (313), and "Time...Golden in the mercy of his means" (313). He realizes the value of time now that he is older and no longer youthful. We can hear through his words that he wishes he could have cherished time as a child as he now cherishes and values it. He last uses the word golden in the past tense. The children are spoken of "before...golden" (313). As an adult he is no linger as powerful as he was as a child. "Golden" (313) time has forever taken him far away from his "childless land" (314).
A book that describes an amazing interpretation about what African American had to face while living in a world where they were treated differently is the book The Fire Next Time .In the book The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, it describes a African American boy who is following the path of life by listening to his uncle advice about the world. “ Wherever you turn, James, in your short time on this earth, you have been told where you could go and what you could do (and how you can do it) and where you could live and whom you could marry.” (Chapter 1. Page 7) The advice that is given to James in the book; is that not everyone is going to always be pleased; no matter what everyone will not be treated equally no matter what rights given.
In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of adolescent boys are stranded on an island after a plane crash. There are no adults on the island, and the boys must fend for themselves. An older boy Ralph is elected ‘chief’, and they try to survive on their new home. In lord of the flies fire is a form of hope for the boys cast away on the island. It brings them together in some ways and keeps their spirits up. A couple of ways that fire hope are: the signal fire, which gives them faith in being rescued, and having fire to cook with, which means that they can survive with the food that they have.
Like a tsunami happening right after a earthquake, nature doesn't care that the town or city was already partially destroyed, it does what it does because it simply doesn't care. Like in the story right after the man had fallen in the water, as if he wasn't cold enough already nature goes and drops the temperature even more. In the naturalist story “To Build a Fire” by Jack London the theme is that nature doesn’t care who you are, this is shown by the use of the elements of plot, imagery, setting & mood, and finally the conflict of the story.
In the story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, there are three principal themes. They are respecting nature, and considering results of actions. The main theme, or universal truth, is heeding warnings. The themes are shown through the character and his actions. The main character in the story had an attitude that prevented him from heeding internal and external warnings. He did not respect nature's power, and therefore he paid with his life. His attitude was arrogant and careless.
But he realized, it’s either chicken out or put his best foot forward. So he tried to fight again, he failed more times than the stars in the sky. But he never gave up. Finally, he had found a good chance, a brightside. And he is giving it all he’s got. For Gold doesn’t shine just because it wants to. For gold only shines under pressure.
